I liked this jerky. It's got a good flavor, the pieces are a nice size and texture, and it's from grass-fed beef (no organic claims, however). It's imported from Brazil. The price seems to be comparable with grocery store prices, although I liked it better than the typical grocery store brands. The original flavor is salty - no sweetness. The 4-oz bag is a good size to have - more than one snack, but it probably won't dry out before you eat it all.

The positives:

1. Grass fed beef

2. Good texture, not too hard

3. Mostly even strips of bite sized pieces, not too big or chunky

4. Good flavor

The negatives:

1. MSG

2. High sodium (not excessive compared to most beef jerky, but it's still a lot of salt)

3. A zipper top on the bag would be nice

Mr Z Premium Cuts, Premium Beef Jerky (Teriyaki):

Comes in a 4-ounce bag packaged with an OxyFree packet

(oxygen Absorber) to help preserve quality and

freshness. The jerky pieces are lightly flavored with

teriyaki/smoke, which took me several pieces to get

used to the taste; have a chewy texture, and are very

flavorful. This is a product made from grass-fed beef,

with little fat content (4g) for the bag, with no

saturated or trans fat. Sodium content is high though

(2,160 mg) for the bag.

I was pleased to see the Grass-fed beef label on this jerky, and hoped that meant it was produced by a company that appreciated quality. I took a little taste, and it was pretty good. But I was highly disappointed when I turned the package over and discovered the grass-fed beef is combined with very unhealthy, dangerous ingredients. This product includes MSG and sodium nitrate. So don't buy if you care about the things you put in your body actually being good for you. Good taste isn't enough for me.

While I normally review books, today I'm reviewing a snack. Mr. Z Premium Beef Jerky. On the bag I note that this stuff is made from Brazilian grass-fed beef. It's high in protein, not so high in fat. So far, so good. And although the product contains a good dose of sodium it doesn't taste all that salty.

But, getting down to the eating, the product is not that great. It's extremely chewy, tough in fact, and not all that flavorful. If this were a book, I'd have to push myself to finish it. I've tasted better beef jerky than this. It comes in a bag that's not re-sealable, so you'll have to put it in the refrigerator between snacking sessions. And use one of those bag clips. It's okay if you're really looking for a snack to go with that thriller you just started, but, it could be better. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.

I do not usually eat beef jerky, but I found this to be quite flavorful and with a goo dtexture - not too chewy. It certainly is better than most other beef jerky I have tried, and I would recommend it!

Mr. Z's jerky is good stuff. It is made from grass-fed beef from Brazil, packed with protein and very low in fat. I like it as a snack or as the protein component of a light meal on the go. The seasonings for the Teriyaki flavor are just right: spicy and savory, but not to the point of overwhelming the rich flavor of the natural beef. It strikes me that they've got just the right texture here -- some brands aim for a kind of moist or softened feel and I don't like that; this one seems to be neither too dry and hard nor too moist and soft.

My only complaint is with the packaging. The 4-ounce bags supply much more than I would use at one sitting, but there is no ziploc seal that allows me to easily store what I don't use for later. Many of the standard brands available in the grocery story do come with ziploc storage. I wish Mr. Z had thought of that.

I can't say that I'm big fan of meat, unlike my husband -- the man would make a meat-shake if he could and happily clog an artery. So when the package arrived, he quickly dove in, halfway finishing it. And by day two, he used what was left to mix into his scrambled eggs in the morning (yeah, I know ... but we have good health insurance). I fought for a few scraps and actually liked it. The flavoring wasn't too sweet, it didn't reek of additives, and thankfully it didn't have the texture of leather.

When I ordered the MR. Z PREMIUM BEEF JERKY, I was attracted to the fact that it was listed as premium high quality grass fed beef. The only places that tend to use grain fed high quality beef are those who are honoring a health oriented diet- or so it OFTEN goes. I expected it to be relatively safe to eat- safe from chemicals and lacking in some ingredients shown to be bad for health.

With MR. Z, this is not the case.

When I got my package of Mr. Z Teriyaki Beef Jerky, I was very disturbed to see what they are calling *premium grass-fed beef* is polluted with all kinds of bad ingredients- among them MSG, sugar, glycol propylene, sodium nitrite and caramel color.

Some people might not mind this, but if you are at all health conscious as I am, this is quite disturbing.

TASTE TEST

I took a taste of this jerky so I could let you all know what it is like and the effect was awful at best.

Initially, the flavor is a flat flavor, barely any beef at all. Then comes the sickening sweet flavor of sweetened soy sauce followed by an acrid fizzy flavor of MSG- yes, you CAN taste MSG.

Unfortunately, the MSG is so strong that it has stayed in my throat fizzing and feeling icky for over a half hour now. I also experienced some dizziness and heart palpitations- very typical of high MSG content in something for me.

TEXTURE

The texture of this jerky is moist and easy to chew- not leathery like some jerky is. There is a lot of salt as well, not unusual for jerky type products. The color is very reddish caramel color- from the coloring added, I am sure.

FINAL COMMENTS

The package instructs you to use up all opened packages in three days unless you plan to refrigerate it, however, no mention of a time frame of refrigeration is mentioned once opened.

I am very repulsed by this product. Although I am not a big meat eater, I don't mind an occasional bite of good quality grass fed game meat or organic meat or wild game meat or meat product once in a great while.

This MR.Z Beef Jerky is terrible. I can not recommend this to anyone- if nothing else based upon the high MSG content alone.

Pointless really to have no zip lock on a bag and the product tasted off. The product didn't have a really long shelf life when I bought it. Not a fan, what is the point of grass fed if you have msg.

Like the [[Teriyaki Flavor]], The Mr. Z original flavor has a great taste. Unlike Jack Link's, the seasonings don't overpower the beef flavor and it's much more tender. It's a very tasty beef jerky but just like the [[Teriyaki Flavor]], it has MSG. If it didn't have MSG, I would have given it a full 5 stars.
