Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Phooey on unconditional love. That's the sentiment of the eponymous sourpuss, who can't stand the doting of his owner, a blissfully happy girl named Emily. "The girl's constant babbling, 'Blah-de-blah, blah, blah,' bored his whiskers off. He wanted more than this dull life." But when Mr. Pusskins finally seizes the opportunity to run away, he soon realizes that life on the streets is not what he bargained for. Dirty, cold and alone, he thinks, "Emily had given him everything a cat could ever dream of... but he had never been nice to her." In the book's funniest scene, Mr. Pusskins literally phones home, meows pitifully into the receiver, and is quickly reunited with his adoring human: "Now both Emily and Mr. Pusskins realize how lucky they are to have each other." Although the writing can be overly literal, Lloyd's astutely cartooned pictures more than make up for what her prose lacks in punch. Mr. Pusskins starts out as a fat, angry-looking oval of orange fur, with a tail that literally bristles with resentment, disgust and naughtiness; during his dark night of the soul, the tail shrivels up and falls behind him like a piece of furry seaweed. By book's end, the harsh black brushstrokes that detailed his coat have softened considerably, and his eyes are as wide and adoring as Emily's. Clearly, it's the beginning of a revitalized relationship. Ages 4-6. (Dec.)

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1—Mr. Pusskins is a cantankerous cat who doesn't appreciate his young owner. When Emily lovingly coos, "what a handsome boy you are!" all he hears is "Blah-de-blah, blah, blah." Feeling smothered and yearning for some "naughty fun," he runs away. He wreaks havoc in neighborhood gardens, rummages through garbage cans, and hangs out with the notorious "Pesky Cat Gang." However, he soon tires of his new life. He regrets his ill treatment of Emily, and when they are finally reunited, he changes his ungrateful ways. Humorous illustrations capture this fluffy, ginger-colored sourpuss in all of his grouchy glory, and his big, round eyes convey a range of expressions, from haughtiness to remorse. This sassy love story will be a storytime hit.—Linda Ludke, London Public Library, Ontario, Canada

Despite the fact that one of my two kids can read by herself, they still love to listen to bedtime stories. Mr. Pusskins: A Love Story makes for an excellent read-aloud. The pictures are large and comical, and the story itself offers many opportunities for fun voices. It teaches a subtle lesson about appreciating what we have, but it's never preachy and always fun.

You can't help but fall in love with Mr. Pusskins. It's a lesson in love, and delivered with such humour as we watch him barely tolerating all the love and affection gleefully bestowed upon him by his owner Emily, who is a little girl. Mr. P is rather curmudgeonly and he sets out on his own. After initially enjoying his freedom, he finds that he didn't appreciate Emily, that life isn't very pleasant without her, and how lucky he had been to have her. Did Emily miss him? Would he find her? Would she take him back??? The suspenseful ending made me laugh and cry at the same time.

The drawings are wonderful. Mr. Pusskins' expression, as you can tell by the cover, is perfectly drawn.

As they said on NPR, it's a classic "cat loses girl, cat gets girl" story.

I saw this book on display about a year ago at a bookstore. I was so glad to find it again! I'm a 41-year-old woman, and I was instantly smitten with the crotchety Mr. Pusskins. His "portrait" on the front of the book reminds me of when I haven't had coffee. I see there's a second Mr. Pusskins book -- I simply must have it! With Christmas coming up, this would make a fabulous gift to anyone with a sense of humor, no matter what their age.

Our family absolutely loves this book. It has all the fun elements that make it easy to read but also a joy to act out and emote. It has definitely been our favorite of all the children's books we have read. I can't recommend it enough for story time and bedtime reading. No heavy lectures, no overbearing storylines, just a fun little tale of a mean little kitty who learns to appreciate what he has.

I had to pick up "Mr. Pusskins". Once I saw his crabby cat countenance on the cover, I would have picked his book, even if I didn't have kids as an excuse. He is just too delightful for words.

Now, having read the book more than a few times, I'm here to recommend it you as a very nice book for children between Toddler and 8 years of age. The reason being, not only the sweet, colorful artwork, but the wonderful message that Sam Lloyd has woven into this tale.

The story is about Mr. Pusskins and the girl that absolutely adores him. She shares all her best things with him, but does Mr. Pusskins appreciate the brushing and story-telling? NO he does not. And so one day he decides to 'go and have some fun'.

Well at the end of the book, Mr. P~ learns a thing or two about life and love. And I think children will get the message. And all of us will be reminded that sometimes we take things for granted, when we shouldn't.

Talking Points:::
Bright, sweet, fun artwork!
Great message and delivery.
Good read-aloud for the Toddler to 8 year-old range

Mr. Pusskins is your typical aloof cat. He's like most people if you think of it...doesn't realize how good he has it and takes for granted the ones that love him. He does learn what happens when he gets too big for his britches, and falls in with the wrong crowd. He finally comes to the realization of how much he was loved and how great he had it. He lucks outs in that his owner, Emily, is determined to find him and does.
My granddaughter LOVED this books and so do I. It teaches a very valuable and age-old lesson: Appreciate what you have and be good to those who love you, not take them for granted. This is a lesson that alot of people still need to learn! This book does a wonderful job doing just that.

I hated cats, especially my wife's, until last March when we brought home two little unrelated kittens from the pound - replacing her adult cat that had disappeared. I found I couldn't get enough of them, from the very first moment - always playing/fighting with each other, exploring, being affectionate. So, when I saw "Mr. Pusskins," I just had to read it.

It's about a young girl (Emily) who loves her cat, despite its cantankerousness. Then, one night he sneaks out, spurning the love and attention she had showered on Mr. Pusskins. At first it was great fun, meeting other cats and roaming around. Then came the wind and the rain, his "friends" disappeared, and Mr. Pusskins was all by himself. Fortunately, he found a "Lost Cat" poster with his picture on it, realized how ungrateful he'd been, called the number, and was rescued.

A modern-day "Happily Ever After" story.

My family loved the tale of Mr Pusskins. The interesting illustrations held the attention of the 5 year old. The 3 year old thought the story was too long. Mr. Pusskin's appearance and attitude is similar to that of our persian cat; therefore, we could relate to the story. The theme is classic: the grass is always greener on the other side, but you'd be better off to appreciate what you have.
