Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 1–2—Mr. Putter and his cat have never had any problems sleeping. They could sleep anywhere at anytime. One night, however, Mr. Putter's stomach is grumbling and he is restless. Earlier that evening Mrs. Teaberry had made pineapple jelly rolls, and Mr. Putter ate 21 of them. To help his stomach, he and Tabby take a walk to look at the stars and run into Mrs. Teaberry and her dog, Zeke, who also ate too many jelly rolls. With soft pencil sketches colored with watercolor and gouache, the amusing illustrations energize the story and add to the fun. An excellent choice for beginning and developing readers.—Erika Qualls, Ela Area Public Library District, Lake Zurich, IL

I enjoyed the story line and love Arthur Howard's illustrations!

As an educator, I appreciate the crafting of these books: the language is interesting, the vocabulary rich, and the stories have both humor and substance to them.
Evelyn Jaskoski
From the friendship between pet and human, to Mr. Putter and Mrs. Teaberry, even to Tabby and Zeke!

Love, love, love these books! My children and i read them over and over and always with a smile on our faces. The illustrator gives the characters (people and pets) such fantastic facial expressions. What a great read!

Cynthia Rylant has created two of the most charming old characters in young children's literature! As an educator, I appreciate the crafting of these books: the language is interesting, the vocabulary rich, and the stories have both humor and substance to them. They are not just fluff, and the children who read them know it. My own son loved all of the Mr. Putter and Tabby books, and we now give them as gifts to our young friends. I highly recommend any and all of them (though my favorites are Mr. Putter and Tabby Pour the Tea, and Pick the Pears).

I love all the Mr Putter and Tabby books. My all time favorites are Mr Putter & Tabby, Mr Putter & Tabby Paint the Porch & Mr Putter & Tabby Pick the Pears. This one is up there but not a favorite. I do recommend it as I think it leaves the reader wondering if Mr Putter & Mrs Teaberry (the lovely, quirky neighbor) are going to get hitched. Read it to find out why and if you agree.

I love watching the relationship between Mr. Putter and Mrs. Teaberry develop. They are great neighbors and friends. They take care of each other.

I have all of the Mr. Putter and Tabby books and this is one of my favorites. I enjoyed the story line and love Arthur Howard's illustrations! He did an excellent job of making Cynthia Rylant's words come to life.
