This review is from: Mr Rogers Neighborhood: Making Music [VHS] (VHS Tape)
As a Music Teacher of Kindergarten through Second Grade, in a Bronx, NYC Public School, I am constantly searching for new and exciting ways in which to introduce my inner-city students to Classical Music. My program covers all phases and all genres of music. I incorporate instruments, CD's, audiotapes, storybooks, technology, videotapes and DVD's into the Music curriculum.
Several years ago I purchased the video, "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood: Making Music." The first class, with which I had used that tape, was a group of 30 rambunctious 10 yr. olds. Much to my surprise, they were all completely-focused on that video presentation. They had many questions pertaining to its content. They were especially amazed with the way in which bass violins are made.
When I showed that video to a class of hyperactive 5 yr. olds, they reacted in the same way! In fact, several months later, they asked if I would re-run that show, for them.
Today I presented that tape to a class of Second Graders. They asked if I could take them on a field trip, to a factory where musical instruments are made.!
I believe that this particular videotape is a big hit with children of all ages, because of its fast pace and variety. It is done at a level that is geared towards children of all ages. Mr. Rogers does not devote the entire tape to the factory. He breaks up the realistic content with the fantasy of make-believe and puppets. Then he visits with YoYo Ma.
While showing this video, I pause the tape to explain things such as the bridge on the violin and the safety goggles that the worker wears.
I only wish that I could find more, musically-informative videos!
