Best Entertainment for Kids. Recommended by Pediatricians,
This review is from: Mr Rogers Neighborhood: Music & Feelings [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Mister Rogers is probably the best show ever made for children, because he understands the educational and emotional needs of young children. It may not seem like it, but quite a bit of thought was put into the design, format and content of Mister Rogers Neighborhood. He takes children on field trips. He teaches them many important things about themselves and encourages creativity. He is a good person - an educator - to invite into your home and share time with your child. If your young child does not watch Mister Rogers, she should. This episode, "Music and Feelings," is especially excellent.
In this episode, Mister Rogers introduces the subject of music to young children. He talks about music in a way that a very young person would appreciate. He encourages the young viewers to think creatively about the creation of music. The legendary children's musician Ella Jenkins makes an appearance, and so does the legendary classical music virtuoso Yo Yo Ma. Mister Rogers also takes the vievers on a field trip to a place where instruments are crafted and the viewers get to learn how violins are made. Then the famous trolley takes the children to the imaginary Land of Make Believe with famous characters like King Friday. Then young children receive a gentle message about understanding their feelings and how to handle them properly. This is a great video for very young children, and Mister Rogers is an icon of quality parenting. That's why Mister Rogers's Neighborhood is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics - your child's doctor. Letting a young child watch Mister Rogers' Neighborhood is almost like sending your child to a super preschool class or almost like spending time with a loving, involved grandparent. Careful parents wanting the best for their children trust Mister Rogers. His television show is not as popular as it used to be (once hugely popular) and not as popular as other commercial, shallow television programs. It is not targeted at adults. Instead Mister Rogers is educational entertainment for young children ages two, three, four, and five; the little ones learning to count one-two-three-four-five, tie their shoes, and just beginning to understand themselves and their worlds. His goal is not catchy entertainment, but to help very young children with their early development. His message is simple. "You're special. "I like you just the way you are. "There's only one person in the whole world just like you." Mister Rogers' neighborhood teaches young children to like themselves and respect others. He speaks to them directly and encourages them to use their creativity. He brings them on field trips to interesting places, like a farm, bakery, barber shop, and balloon factory. Along the way, children learn about dealing with the death of a pet, giving back something that doesn't belong to you, dealing with feelings constructively, attending school for the first time, and crossing the road safely. For over three decades he has provided a slow-moving, stable presence to young children in a world that has rapidly changing - for better and for worse. Fred Rogers graduated magna cum laude from Rollins College in Florida in music composition and turned his attention to television, then in its infancy, as a way to reach children positively. He studied child educational psychology at the graduate level under the noted Dr. Margaret McFarland. He was a pioneer and changed the way we view early childhood education. He was ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1963 and charged with the ministry of helping children. He wrote over 150 songs, produced and wrote almost all of his shows, and staged most of his puppets himself. Fred Rogers collected four Emmy Awards, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, a Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Academy of Television and Arts Sciences, numerous honorary degrees, and other awards. One of his red cardigan sweaters is enshrined in the Smithsonian Institute. Despite his humble demeanor, Mister Rogers became widely recognized as a trusted authority on early childhood education, testifying before Congress and interviewed frequently. In an Associated Press Interview he said, "We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It's easy to say `It's not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.' Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes." Fred Rogers is one of the unsung heroes of our society, helping children to learn about themselves, learn about the world, like themselves, and respect other people. He was very special. Mister Rogers is excellent entertainment for young children.
