Great hard bop,

"Mr. Wizard" is a great outing for fans of hard bop. Herring packs plenty of variety into nine tracks, yet somehow everything flows together seamlessly. The classic swing of "All god's chillun got rythm," the funk sounds of "citizen of zamunda," the ballad "you leave me breathless," and the frenzy of the concluding title track all sound like they belong together. The majority of the tracks are original compositions, most notably "citizen of zamunda" by bassist Richie Goods, which features Herring on soprano saxophone. Regardless of whether you're into bop, "Mr. Wizard" is a lot of fun.
