Editorial Reviews

In a charming and delightful tale, based on the Paul Gallico novel, Angela Lansbury wonderfully portrays Mrs. Arris, an honest, hardworking cleaning woman who dreams of the luxuries she does not have. A heart warming movie for the whole family.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Sincere Film, September 28, 2001
By A Customer
It's a small movie that I happened to catch as a library rental shortly after the 9/11 disaster. I picked it up because I saw Omar Sharif on the cover, whom I always enjoy seeing. Once you get past the initial shock of Angela Lansbury's cockney accent, you get to enjoy seeing her long-standing friendship with another charwoman over the course of the film. It really is a fairy tale, and I rather hoped for a marriage at the end. The supporting cast is good, especially the lovely model Natasha and new love, the lowly accountant at the House of Dior. Angela brings hope and healing to everyone around her, and you really hope that she gets as good as she gives. Nothing is visually better than Paris in the 1950s and all those great cars and clothes. I found myself really drawn to this movie, and Omar Sharif really adds the touch of class. A good family film. I didn't give it five stars, because I don't think the fact that she really had to work hard to save her money was demonstrated. It was filmed in Budapest, and I saw that Laurence Olivier's son was mentioned in the credits, but I could not figure out who he played in the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars A study of self-determination, May 13, 1999
i saw this movie a couple of times and I am impressed how this woman saved her money, forego a few things, walked back and forth to work for three years just so she could have a Dior gown...That movie gave me hope that if you want something bad enough, you can have it..A beautiful movie...

I really enjoyed this movie. It is a heartwarming story that has a truly meaningful message, to hope and dream can lead to the inspiration that one needs in order to uplift their life and those that surround them in a miraculous way. I am very disappointed to hear that it is not available to purchase. I hope it will be rereleased so I can share it with my loved ones.
