Mrs Balls is a South African staple. It's not only one of the best chutney's I've ever eaten with curry but it does double duty as a sweet/sour sauce or dip, turns regular old cheese sandwiches into a teatime delicacy and goes wonderfully with deli meats. We go through huge amounts of the stuff (as I imagine most south africans do) and I always take particular pleasure in introducing my american friends to its yumminess.

Highly recommended by this particular ex-pat.

Anyone who grew up in South Africa loves Mrs. Balls Chutney. I have been living in the USA for twenty years and have tried many chutneys, including many from local Indian Groceries and home-made varieties from speciality stores. Nothing quite beats the taste of this brand. I know many recipes that use this chutney to make a wonderful marinade, or sauce for chicken dishes as well. These recipes can be found on line. I was delighted to find that Amazon had listed this incredible product. I bought six bottles and as soon as they are finished, I know where I can find them again. Either the Regular or the Peach varieties are a family favorite, even amongst my American born children. Thank you Amazon.

I notice that most, if not all, of the reviews are by expatriate South Africans who give this product 5 stars because it's a reminder of home; more than that, evidently it's something they couldn't imagine doing without in South Africa, so they're ecstatic that they can finally get it here. I can respect that.

It's kind of like the Indian musical instrument, the shenai. To most Westerners, it sounds kind of like a New Year's Eve party horn, at best; it's kind of obnoxious, really, or at least takes some getting used to. But South Asians love to hear it, because they grew up with it, and it's associated with happy occasions like weddings.

So I thought I'd give the NON-South African's point of view.

Well, it's chutney. It's okay. It's not the best chutney I've ever had, but it's okay. It doesn't taste like Major Gray's, or like many different Indian chutneys I've had. It doesn't seem to have any mango in it. I don't know what's in it--some citrus peel of some sort, I think, possibly some raisins, I really don't know. A LOT of vinegar, for sure, and a lot of sugar!
The flavor is basically sweet and sour, or perhaps I should say sour and sweet. It's quite sour, and also pretty sweet. And fruity, mystery fruity. Probably the best way I could describe it is this: take Major Gray's chutney, take away the mango flavor, and take away any spiciness it has, and that's what this is.

Like the Canadian railroad construction worker said when he tasted the cook's moose turd pie,
"Good, though"!

(Because if you complain, they make you the cook)

The first two things I noticed were
1) it's SOUR!
2) it's not hot, AT ALL. Not AT ALL. You can't believe how not hot it is.

I was first exposed to Mrs. Balls in South Africa. It was a nice flavor but I didn't truly appreciate it since all of the foods I used it with were new flavors to me. Now that I tried it on American food, I can't believe how good it really is. It adds such a new twist to the same old foods. I looked to buy it in the US stores and couldn't find it anywhere. I was so happy to find a vendor and even more impressed that it wasn't overpriced. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this product

Just seeing the jar on the table as one settles down to a traditional South African lamb curry with a dollop of Mrs. Ball's is enough to put you mentally right down in Durban or Jo'burg. Somebody told me they'd changed the recipe, but it tastes original to me.

My family & I used to think this was the best chutney we have ever tasted and we used it daily for over 25yrs. We never bought any other chutney as this fulfilled all that we needed it for. We have been buying it for over 25yrs and we have noticed for a long time now that there is a change in it's quality. It has been made thinner as its now pourable like tomato sauce and it was always very thick. It used to be so thick that when we opened a new bottle we would have to use a knife to scrape the first part of it out the bottle, but now it does not do that and its now very watery. It's also not as sweet as it used to be bcuz its been watered down. No-one can tell us there is no change bcuz we have used it for many, many yrs, almost every day for over 25years!... and there is very much a change in its quality. Even our family and friends have noticed the difference. If it continues to change in quality, this famous chutney will gradually begin to lose loyal customers. We buy one a month now, when we used to buy 1 to 2 every week but we miss the original quality... its the reason why we don't buy it as much as we used to anymore bcuz of the change. Sadly, we are now testing other chutneys to use.

I used to travel to South Africa all the time and I learned to love this stuff. When I stopped going there my supply ran out, so when I saw it here I bought a few bottles. A little pricy with shipping, but the taste is wonderful. Will rebuy when I run out.
