MRS CALDICOT'S CABBAGE WAR is a delightful British comedy gem, with Pauline Collins ("Upstairs Downstairs", "Shirley Valentine") in the lead role and a roster of fine British players.

Thelma Caldicot (Pauline Collins) lives a boring life, under the thumb of her mean-spirited husband (Terence Rigby). When he unexpectedly dies, Thelma finally starts living her own life, but is dealt another blow by her money-hungry son Derek (Peter Capaldi). He decides that Thelma cannot possibly live by herself, sells the house and places his mother in a nursing home.

Once in the nursing home, Thelma befriends some of the residents including Joyce (Sheila Reid), Bernard (Frank Middlemass) and Audrey (Gwenllian Davies). When they get tired of having to eat cabbage for dinner every night, the residents start a protest, led by Thelma, which eventually sees them move out of the home and into a luxury hotel!

Such a lovely, gentle film with moments of comedy and pathos in equal measures. Pauline Collins is the perfect actress to bring to life the sparky, resourceful Mrs Caldicot, and plays her as an extension of her legendary and beloved "Shirley Valentine".

With John Alderton (Collins' real-life husband), Anna Wilson-Jones, Frank Mills, Isla Blair, Wanda Ventham, Martin Jarvis and Selina Cadell.

A British comedy not-to-be-missed.

An excellent little movie, quite entertaining. The veteran actors show us that they still have what it takes to make a great comedy film without using any unnecessary gratuitous foul language and violence. My kind of entertainment and I am sure I am not the only one who appreciates this genre.

This is essential viewing for anyone who has a loved one in aged care, or contemplating moving into care - it reminds you to keep a sense of humour, while telling a few 'home truths'about aged care. Pauline Collins and John Alderton are masters of subtle comedy.
