Perfect for your little rascal,
By A Customer
This review is from: Mrs.Coverlet's Magicians - Book #2 (Lost Treasures) (Paperback)
I'm an old geezer now, but I did get a kick out of this one when I was a young troublemaker. In contrast to another reviewer, I can recommend this book because it is lacking a socially redeeming message. It is simply a good read, mostly about a little boy brimming with mischief. Back then he elicited admonition and laughter. Today they would diagnosis him as having "ADHD" and put him on Ritalin. It's definitely not in the league with Huck Finn, but it is fun all the same.

Mary Nash was a terrific writer with a great sense of humor and a mischievous imagination. I've been re-reading this book since the mid-sixties. Very funny. I can't wait until there are grandchildren for me to read this to. While it's a great Christmas story, it can be enjoyed by people of all faiths; the characters are wonderfully human and funny.Mary Nash wrote a book before this - "While Mrs. Coverlet Was Away" - and another after this - "Mrs. Coverlet's Detectives" - but this was the best of the three. I don't know if the re-issue has the orginal illustrations by Garret Price, but there's probably an orginal copy in your public library, so check them out when you can. They added a lot to the story. Price's pictures are priceless (pardon the pun). Incidently, try the chocolate bread pudding recipe. My version is a Thanksgiving standby. Just follow the directions in the book. Serve hot or warm with whipped cream on top.

A wonderful story that has stayed in my mind from my childhood. I would recommend this 100% for a 4-6th grader. A wonderful story of family, warmth and caring, with humor and adventure. I sought this book out for my own children to read, and they enjoyed it thoroughly.

Unforgettable,

This review is from: Lost Treasures: Mrs. Coverlet's Magician - Book #2 (Paperback)
One of the best books I read as a child (5th grade) and one I read again every year at Christmas (I'm now in my 30's). I can't wait to share this book with my own children, and as a librarian, I urged it onto every child who would listen. Toad is one of the most memorable child characters I have ever come across, and this is a "true meaning of Christmas" story with a nice, realistic edge that stands the test of time. This is a real classic.

It's a shame that (so far as I know) Dr. Nash only wrote 3 books about the Persever kids, but they formed very happy memories for me 35 years ago, and they arrived without a hint of aging in the laps of my kids over the past few years. The set-up is so familiar from the last 20 years of kids' books and movies, but the execution in this book and the other two, especially "While Mrs. Coverlet Was Away," that I know parents will love these as much as I did. The Toad is mischief incarnate, though in a fairly "Leave it To Beaver" vein. The two older doting siblings are so very decent and striving to provide a good upbringing for their (nearly) orphaned little brother. In this book in particular, where (SPOILER ALERT)little Toad causes their overly doting neighbor Eva to be confined to her bed for no good reason (voodoo is at work), the little scamp delivers such a memorable alternate closing line to the Lord's Prayer, "...and deliver us from Eva..." My 3 kids and wife love these books as much as I do, hope you do too.

I still remember this book from when I last read it when I was about 10 years old (I read it two or three times back then). I was pleased to see I could buy a copy used.

This book is about a young boy called the Toad. The Toad is always getting into trouble. This is a simple and fun book to read. There are a lot of great role models in this book. Mrs. Coverlet is one of them.
