Book Description

THE BUSINESS OF DEATH

Orlando Edison is a stockbroker using London’s infatuation with foreign mining ventures to make a fortune. He has curried favor with the nation’s most respected aristocrats, even inviting three influential investors—known as the Merry Gentlemen—to be part of his latest enterprise. Edison is welcomed in the highest circles and moves with ease among the rich and powerful. But a few days before Christmas, he is found murdered.

Inspector Witherspoon and his household are looking forward to the festive season. But they all know their duty, and led by the intrepid Mrs. Jeffries, they plan to see justice served for the holidays . . .

A Mrs. Jeffries Mystery

She keeps house for Inspector Witherspoon . . . and keeps him on his toes. Everyone’s awed by his Scotland Yard successes—but they don’t know about his secret weapon. No matter how messy the murder or how dirty the deed, Mrs. Jeffries’ polished detection skills are up to the task . . . proving that behind every great man there’s a woman—and that a crimesolver’s work is never done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another delightful cozy mystery by Emily Brightwell November 12, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It is Christmas time and while Inspector Gerald Witherspoon's household staff is usually excited to help him solve a murder case this year they are distracted by other things. When Mrs. Jeffries realizes they aren't much help to Witherspoon (who is unaware of their help behind the scenes) in this latest case she does what she can to pull them together. But is it too late to help the Inspector solve the murder of Orlando Edison?

“Mrs. Jeffries and the Merry Gentlemen“is the 32nd book in Emily Brightwell's Inspector Witherspoon and Mrs. Jeffries cozy mystery series and as always I'm impressed and (a bit awed) at how Brightwell has managed to keep this series fresh after so many books. She always manages to find a fresh twist for each book and in this one it is the distracted household staff members - this is not only believable but a bit humorous and a welcome diversion from the somewhat gruesome murder (Brightwell does not go into graphic details - this is a cozy mystery after all). As always, Brightwell shows not only Witherspoon and Constable Barnes questioning the suspects but the staff doing their own investigating and she gives readers just enough clues to solve the mystery along with the characters. One thing I really like is how seamlessly she has introduced Phyllis into the series - she is a relatively new character yet it feels like she has been involved from the very beginning of the series. The Victorian setting is a nice one and I always enjoy curling up with these books and being transported to another world filled with characters that now feel like old friends.

“Mrs. Jeffries and the Merry Gentlemen“is another delightful cozy mystery by Emily Brightwell.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL series October 31, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I really enjoy reading "cozy mystery" series, and Mrs. Jeffries is my favorite. The series takes place in Victorian England. The household staff works for a Homicide Inspector and (without his knowledge) help him solve homicides. This is a brand new book in the series. (I believe it is the 32nd book in the series.) Sometimes when a series goes on, the series goes downhill in quality, but this book is just as enjoyable as all the rest. The book is very well written and an easy read. The quality of the writing and story has not diminished.

I highly recommend the Mrs. Jeffries series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Christmas Cozy! December 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
There's one thing better than a Christmas mystery at Christmastime, and that's a Victorian Christmas cozy during the season. And that is what this book is. Mrs. Jeffries and her crew are trying to help their inspector when a man is murdered in his home just before Christmas. Even though the man was well-liked, there doesn't appear to be a shortage of suspects in this killing. This book has probably got the longest list of suspects that I've ever seen in this enjoyable series. There is lots of excitement while the murderer is "sussed out", and lots of Victorian Christmas atmosphere as a backdrop. I really enjoyed this book and it's a great addition to this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Gift Anytime of Year November 13, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Emily Brightwell has done it again. Each one of the "Mrs. Jeffries" series stands on its own, but given as a gift to someone who hasn't read any of this series -- and who likes English cozies -- you will have opened the door to many hours of enjoyable reading! (There is no better gift than that!) The continuing characters are so well-defined, you have no trouble remembering who and what they are. I hope the author continues with the series for a long time!
