All-in-all it's probably safe to say he hasn't a clue what is going on. It is probably equally safe to guess that Mrs Jones does.

Not that 'safe' is quite the right word to use here or, there again, maybe it is.

There were Twelve (12) 5-star reviews & One (1) - 2 star review ... so I bought the book. Let this be a lesson to me not to take as gospel that the majority knows best.

Ms. Morton & Mrs. Jones are both in desperate need of a good editor.

The plot was ambitious with several twists & turns so much so it actually became so convoluted it lost its appeal.

The so-called `snappy' dialogue was actually awkward, uncomfortable & forced. It is so clear that the author is not familiar enough with American English & American slang to make this belivable. It's possible that all the 5-star reviews were from British readers who likely would not notice the anomalies the same way a North American reader would.

Worse, the silly unforgivable grammatical mistakes & misplaced punctuation, all add up to make this a really hard book to read. I wanted to get out my red pen & fix it. It is so distracting that regardless of how potentially good the story may be it just doesn't work. I had to go back frequently & read whole sentences to see if I had read it wrong.

"You need to consider whether they're paying you enough to take that kind of wrap"
"His life in general was going down the pan"
"He remained sat where he was"
"Now what did he ask you to fetch him?" (This from a tough NYC cop???)

After 259 pages of a story about a supposed `honest cop' you end up with this line from him
"... there's no such thing as an honest cop..."

Perhaps if Ms. Morton had set the story in London rather than NYC, she would have been able to write in a tongue familiar to her making her job as author so much easier. How she must have struggled with this. I'm guessing at least as much as I struggled to read it.

The writing just grated on my nerves & I would have no interest in reading anything else from this author. For her sake I hope she finds a good editor to help her out. I feel as if I was duped by the reviews. This was a waste of my time & money.

I purchased this title because of the reviews but no one mentioned the author's lack of mastery of American slang. At one point in the story I actually had to go back to see if the story was set in London. No NYC police detective is going to say things like "Get your kit" (What is a kit anyway?) or "Put your things in the boot". Imagine John McClain of the "Die Hard" movies and get yourself a book on American slang, or keep the setting in England. The storyline was imaginative and the characters were interesting. Unfortunately, I just couldn't get passed the inconsistencies.

Perhaps I'm missing the fun that the five-star reviewers enjoyed, but I didn't even make it through the first scene of the book.

Two pages in (on my Kindle), the author has introduced me to two females -- the occupant of an apartment, and the cop's date who is waiting on him at another location. Neither female has been named, yet the author uses female pronouns (she, her) in referring to both females -- the one IN the scene, and the one who's NOT in the scene. Any writer who's done a proper study on the craft knows the importance of hooking the reader at the beginning, not turning a reader away by violating basics, like keeping your characters straight.

To me, this initial glaring error indicates the book was not professionally edited. Or, the author had the misfortune to have used an unqualified editor. The first scene error, along with the mistakes mentioned by other reviewers, would have been caught right away by a quality editor. In either case, I chose not to continue with the book because I assume there will be other errors, which would definitely be a distraction for me.

Clearly, other reviewers loved many parts of the story, so perhaps if the author can secure a good, quality editor, she'll be able to earn more fans with future books.
