"Mrs. Malory and a Necessary End" is a cozy mystery. This book is the 20th in the series. You don't need to read the previous novels to enjoy this one, and the answers to previous mysteries were not discussed in this one. However, the author did assume that the readers already knew the reoccurring characters and how they were related to Mrs. Malory. This information usually wasn't given when the characters were introduced, yet it became more clear as the story went on.

The story was very fast paced. Each scene focused on adding more clues about the mystery and was mainly dialogue. The descriptions (setting, job, characters, etc.) were brief unless more description was needed to understand and solve the mystery.

The whodunit in this puzzle-mystery was guessable but not obvious. I liked how Mrs. Malory picked up important information simply by her willingness to listen to people talk, that she encouraged them to give this information to the police, and the mutual respect between her and the detective on the case.

There was no sex. There was a very minor amount of explicit bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this novel to those who enjoy puzzle-mystery whodunits.

I received this book as a review copy from the publisher.

Mrs. Malory is a relaxing lady that you would love to have for a friend to go to lunch with, have tea with, and enjoy a gin and tonic while talking aobut the villagers! I enjoy Hazel Hold's books enormously, I can just get lost in the pleasant peaceful life of an English town, and live the life I would love. If you want a pleasant little vacation for an afternoon, read this book

This is a really nice cozy, following well established cozy patterns, and doesn't act like the women in too many of today's cozies. She doesn't break laws, she doesn't go into dark basements or other dangerous places, she doesn't fall in love with the policeman in charge of the case, etc. It is a typical Mrs. Malory, and it has the same group of friends backing her up and leading her along. It's not an exciting book, but it is a nice book to read in front of a fire on a rainy day. I'm not going to tell you about the plot so you can be surprised about which disagreeable person is murdered.

Mrs Mallory is one of my favorite detectives - the books are well written and the characters sympathetic - well worth the reading

All the books in this series are fun, this one included. The characters are always believable, and there is always some delight in the author's pointing out the foibles of certain types.

Monica's daughter Julia needs her after giving birth prematurely while moving. She asks her friend Sheila Malory to replace her three days a week over the next few weeks as a volunteer at a charity shop in Taviscombe. Initially greeted by dreadful Norma Stanley, Mrs. Malory finds the work interesting. However, she also dislikes her controlling egomaniac supervisor the unpleasant Desmond Barlow; a pain to work for as he always criticizes the staff and bullies his wife Wendy; even Norma bows to his tyranny.

Someone must have agreed with Mrs. Malory's assessment just more sharply when the murdered corpse of Desmond is found in the shop. Inspector Bob Morris leads the inquiry while Mrs. Malory gossiping with friends and other townsfolk begins to uncover pertinent information about a man universally disliked.

The latest Mrs. Mallory English village cozy (see Mrs. Malory And Any Man's Death) is a fascinating leisurely paced whodunit. Mrs. Malory's guided tour of Taviscombe enables the armchair reader to see the town through her eyes. Well written and fun to read although fans will quickly boil down the killer to one of two people.

Sheila Malory is always a pleasure to read. I enjoy her conflicted feelings about whether she should be nosey or try to be discreet. Nosiness always wins out. Home life and life in the village makes for great background and her best friend's mother, the never changing Mrs. Dudley always brings a smile. This was one that I had missed before so was delighted to have a fresh read. This will go on my shelf with all of her others to be read again and again.

You'll love Hazel Holt's Mrs. Malory series. I've read every one. Excellent depiction of the vagueness of middle age in a nosy village.
