Book Description

A collection of speculative fiction short stories featuring a Chicago boarding house in the late 1860s that only caters to aliens, really aliens. There are five short stories in the collection: A Problem Guest, Illusions, Lost and Found, Beauty, and Not in My House.

In A Problem Guest Mrs. O'Leary ponders how to deal with a cockroach who is behind in his rent. Actually that is the least of his problems. Mrs. O'Leary learns all is not as it seems In Illusions when a handsome human-looking guest arrives. He is just a little fuzzy around the edges and then there is all those accidents that keep happening. A Cat comes to stay at Mrs. O'Leary's in Lost and Found. Cats are highly sought after as guests in most of the universe. They are graceful, witty and elegant. This Cat also knows more ways to kill than most people can count. The Cat is looking for something in the back alleys of Chicago. If it can't find it, there will be interstellar war. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but when beauty becomes an obsession, what is the cost? In Not in My House, Mrs. O'Leary learns there are definite problems to having a deposed emperor in her house, especially one that looks like an octopus and lives in her second bathroom.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Home Far - Ver Far - From Home April 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Visiting space aliens need a place to stay, and here it is. Men in Black shows what they jobs they do here on Earth, but where do they live? Now we know. Katie O'Leary has a house in 1870s Chicago full of very weird boarders, some nice, some not. She's quite nonchalant about them, almost blase, and isn't afraid to put them in their places when they step out of line.

It's science fantasy - the space travel is essentially instantaneous- but it's internally consistent. It's well written, and the aliens have distinct personalities, abilities, and histories. There's good action, and a wonderful story of the mesmerizing effect of "Beauty". And there should be more stories to come - the alien "cow" hasn't kicked over any lanterns yet.

I enjoyed the stories. Lots of humour and likable characters. A boarding house for aliens certainly has its surprises for both the boarders and proprietor.

5.0 out of 5 stars So much fun -- hard to put down! April 19, 2014

You have tentacles instead of arms? Fine. Six furry legs? Not a problem. Body of a cockroach? Okay. Feed on light? You’ll want a south-facing room. Slugs for dinner? That’ll cost extra. Embroiled in an extra-terrestrial power struggle? Whatever. Just pay your rent on time. And if you have a problem, just talk to Mrs. O’Leary, because the buck – um, I mean the exotic currency of the Hisrow Empire – stops with her.

This is a fun, smart, witty and engaging read, and I sure hope there’s going to be more, because I haven't had NEARLY enough of Mrs. O’Leary and her oddball guests.

4.0 out of 5 stars more, please July 8, 2014

A pleasant collection of little stories to read on a summer afternoon. You'll like Mrs O'Leary and find her guests, er, interesting. I found the last story particularly touching, which rather surprised me, at least a bit. The book has aliens and alien kitties (sort of), and aliens less savory. When I finished the last story I was ready for another. I want to know not only what happens next, but what happened before, just how did Mrs O'Leary get into her odd line of business? If you enjoy a bit of whimsy I think you'll enjoy this collection of tales, gently told.

Wonderful Stories! If you like aliens and a strong heroine, this is the book for you. It is really a collection of short stories & novellas centering on a boarding house in Chicago after the Civil War. Katie O'Leary ran a boarding house that catered to men, many of whom were soldiers from the war and were having difficulties, such as flashbacks that sometimes caused bullets to end up in the wall above her bed. No wonder when she was approached about renting rooms to aliens, she thought that was a better alternative. The characters were interesting, their reasons for being on earth were varied, and the interaction with the landlady was very entertaining. I hope there will be many more stories about the boarding house and its inhabitants.
