K-Gr 3-A serviceable Thanksgiving story. Mrs. Tittle names all of the turkeys on her farm, but one she simply calls Turkey. He knows what Thanksgiving means for his kind and conjures up several imaginative methods of rescuing himself from this cruel fate. Eventually he is saved by his own bravery as he thwarts a would-be thief and earns the name Some Tough Turkey. Using the double play on the word tough, which many kids may not grasp, readers learn that no one bought ``the toughest turkey on the farm.'' The pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations enhance the lighthearted tone of the text. Their buoyant cartoon style captures the comical appearance of turkeys while adding humorous details of their own. While the story may evoke memories of E.B. White's Charlotte's Web (HarperCollins, 1952), as Turkey evades his predetermined fate, the overall presentation and tone of the tale ensures that this title will never become a classic.-Martha Topol, Northwestern Michigan College, Traverse City, MI
