PreSchool-Grade 1-Young children may be acquainted with this jolly character from Mrs. Wishy-Washy (Philomel, 1999). True to her name, the woman loves to wash everything, including her farm creatures. Tired of the "old tin tub/where all the animals go for a scrub," Mrs. Wishy-Washy's pig, cow, and duck rebel and run off to a big city, but they find it "as wild as a farm stampede." They stumble into lots of trouble and end up, dirty and tearful, in the "animal jail" from which they are soon rescued. Fuller's bold, animated watercolor-and-ink illustrations feature humorous expressions on stout, rosy-cheeked humans and silly animals. This gently rhyming text with just the right amount of tension will be a splendid choice for storytimes and welcomed by beginning readers.

Be aware that this book uses the word 'hate' a few times and also refers to Mrs. Wishy Washy as 'mean' old lady...its a good fun story, and I still read it to my daughter, but I edit the choices of words along the way...she has the rest of her life to find out what hate is...a two year old doesn't need to know now.

I teach kindergarten, and my students have read all the books about Mrs. Wishy-washy and her animals. This book has the same fun, joyful tradition of the other stories. The children's immediate comment was "Read it again!". One child wanted to write to Joy Cowley to see if she was going to write another one. This book is a winner.

I have recently purchased this book for my 2 year old and she cannot put this book down. The pictures are wonderful and full of color. The pictures are so big and the story plot is not that long so that for non readers it is just great and lots of fun to read. Suggestions, make noises as you read the few lines and have them call out and descripe the colors and animals seen on the pages. I truly recommend this book because most importantly my daughter loved it and I loved seeing her face.
