Editorial Reviews

2011 release from the '80s Teen Pop priestess, Broadway sensation and actress (Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus and Mega Python vs. Gatoroid). Ms. Vocalist features Debbie's interpretations of top million-selling hits originally by Japanese male vocalists. Features a duet with Mr. Big's Eric Martin ("Sekaijuu no Dareyori Kitto") as well as a cover version (in Japanese) of her very own mega hit "Lost in Your Eyes". The album is a female version of the Mr. Vocalist series of albums that Eric Martin has been releasing since 2008 and which has become a milestone in the history of J-Pop cover albums.

While Deborah didn't write these songs- except for the Lost In Your Eyes cover, it's still a beautifully done album. Her voice is crisp and clean just like in her "Colored Lights" album- very minimal back up vocals and her voice is pure. It's a great collection of love songs for any occasion, whether you're in love, been left or anything at all.

If you're rediscovering her music because you listened to her in the 80s...get it. You'd be shocked this is the same Debbie Gibson. There are obvious points where you do hear her Debbie voice.

I give Ms Vocalist 5 stars because that's honestly what it's worth. From start to finish it's a pleasant fun, awesome album. If her up coming album pop album is anything like THIS..... I do believe she'd have a chance at a major comeback.

On the onset it would seem as if this album should be a disappointment for any Debbie Gibson fan since we are accustomed to her pop releases being nearly all original material written by herself. This album of course (with the exception of "Lost in Your Eyes") are all Japanese pop cover songs.

The surprise here though is that many of these songs sound like songs that Debbie herself would have written at varying points in her career. If you can get past the fact that she didn't actually write the songs then I think many fans will find this to be one of her best recordings.

What stands out the most about this album though is her vocals. Although I think that Debbie is an extremely talented vocalist, I don't think she always utilizes her voice to her advantage. Even in her post teen-pop albums she still liked to scoop and screech to try to hit notes out of her range. There is no scooping and screeching here, just natural beautiful singing that she makes sound effortless. On Ms. Vocalist, she sings with conviction while still being mindful of good vocal technique and singing within her range.

Most of the songs are on the slower or middle-of-the-road side, however, it isn't quite as ballad heavy as her amazing "Think With Your Heart" album. It is hard to get a really good feel for the songs just by listening to clips of them, as with many of these songs you can't get the full flavor of the song until it is played entirely. In fact, I even think the songs sound best when listening to the entire album as a whole instead of just singling out 1 song to play. The album has a very natural flow to it. The arrangements of the songs are interesting, sometimes they take unexpected turns, and at times they are very earthy.

The things I had to do to get this album!

You had better be a die-hard fan or else you won't respect this one. It's not available on amazon, and I didn't want to pay an arm and a leg for an import, so I had to contact a friend who, by chance...moved to Japan! Gosh Debbie a US release would be nice!

All in all, this album brings out Debbie's signiture talents: her awesome voice, rang, creativity, and piano playing. There's nothing she cannot do. The duet with what's his face is awful. That said, except for that track, the album itself makes me want to dim the lights, cook a nice dinner, have wine and proclaim from the roff tops an undying love for someone.

"I Love You" and "True Love" are my favorite tracks. In "True Love" you can hear characteristics of the Debbie from the 80s we all love.

If you're rediscovering her all over her and listned to her in the 80s, this album might surprise you. She onlt gets better at her work. If you can get a copy, I'd say it's worth it. Good job Debbie Gibson. You are one of music's gems and deserve more recognition.

First of all, if you want a physical copy of the CD, try amazon.jp (just scroll to the bottom of the screen). I ordered one that way and received it with no problem.

I love this album, but I think to enjoy this you really need to love Deborah, because it's an album of covers of J-Pop songs that most Americans likely haven't heard of (I certainly hadn't) and not her originals, or covers from the American songbook, or what have you. In short: if you are a Deborah fan, don't miss out.

This album is awesome. I ordered it for two reasons; first I have always been a huge fan of Debbie Gibson & second I saw the video for one of the tracks (on youtube) and just had to own it. Despite most of the songs on here being covers, she did an awesome job of finding ones that fit her well enough that people would think she wrote them herself. I especially like the updated cover of her own hit song "Lost In Your Eyes". Anyone who has ever been a fan of Debbie's is in for a treat if they buy this album!

I'm just surprised sellers decided to bump up the price of this album. I was fortunate enough to get it for only $12.99 here on Amazon, but I do know that limited copies of this album circulated internationally. The majority of these hits are composed by Japanese artists from the 80s and early 90s. If in fact, they were the very Japanese songhits I grew up listening to back in high school when I still resided in Japan. Great job Debbie!
