This book is perfect if you don't know where to go on Mt Tam's 200 miles of trails but have always wanted to explore the mountain. The trail summaries, "getting there" instructions and maps, as well as the actual trail maps are easy and informative. The trail ratings (for running and hiking) are useful as well. This book makes a great gift.

This little book, small enough to put in your daypack for any of the hikes it covers, has 37 maps and trail descriptions for the Mt. Tam area. I discovered delightful areas I hadn't explored previously. Maps are interesting "3D" shaded relief maps with the trails superimposed. There are descriptions of notable flora and fauna, including peak viewing months. Good info on elevation changes, ratings for hiking vs. running, and % of shade on each trail. Also appreciated the numerous indexes and appendices, listed here: Combination Hikes; A Selection of Best Trails; What Others Say (Mt. Tam veterans' fave hikes); A Trail for All Seasons; Geology of Mt. Tam; Climate; History; Animals and Animal Tracks; Wildflowers (by four color groupings); Tree/Plant Communities (three groupings); Natives Vs. Non-Natives; A Quick Guide to Flora; Local Resources; Bibliography. A lot for 115 pages! Discover the paradise that is Mt. Tam just a stone's throw past the Golden Gate Bridge.
