Amp is, of course, the late night MTV program that's helped turn America onto "that electronica stuff," and this is the sequel to 1997's commercially successful Amp collection. Amp 2 gets things started off right with a house-rockin' unreleased track from Fatboy Slim, but can't sustain such sheer energy throughout, courtesy of flaccid beats from the likes of Prodigy and Adam F. Nevertheless, Amp 2 spins an educational emphasis, stressing the link between new and old schools, with varied collaborations between hip-hoppers and electronic artists. The most successful tracks go back to the funk from which both musics borrow--particularly Pigeonhead with Lo-Fidelity All-Stars, a Jungle Brothers remix, and Roni Size/Reprazent's "Brown Paper Bag," which sees the future in the past all by itself. --Mike McGonigal

Spin

[N]early every cut here has some rapper or rude rock boy pumpin' up the adrenaline. With surf guitar, chemical beats, and an incessant sample of obscure MC Lord Finesse changing "Right about now/ The funk soul brother," Fatboy Slim's "The Rockafeller Shank" represents the new brainmeltin', body– poppin' party grove.

5.0 out of 5 stars Open to something new...., February 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mtv Amp 2 (Audio CD)
The bad reviews seem to all be piping from people with in my humble opinion a little closed mindedness in the area of electronic music. This album has quite a collection of new styles. A little lop sided in the fact that a majority of the songs are remixes and include a heavy dose of rap. BUT... this is still VERY good. As for those who said they wanted more "Rave" + "Techno" type music, I can only assume your perspective comes from what you have heard from others... the music contained on this cd represents some of the (in my opinion) better emergings styles of music being played at parties or raves. Get the CD, enjoy it, and see for yourself, DEFINATLY worth the 12bucks...

P.S. I found that many of my friends that are mainly into rap/hiphop really liked this cd the beats are great and the rap artists are top of the heap :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Who defined electronica anyway?, August 13, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Mtv Amp 2 (Audio CD)
I don't know why so many of you guys are slagging down this CD for not being "electronica". There is no such thing as "electronica" anyway - as far as I can tell, that word is simply a marketing term dreamed up by MTV in an attempt to package the UK dance diaspora to the US. Ask any of the big "electronica" artists and they will ALL tell you that they count hip hop as one of their greatest influences. KRS-1 and the Jungle Brothers are only getting due respect when people like Goldie and Aphrodite want to work with them. This is a cool album and a pretty good sample of some of the sounds that are shaping music in the UK right now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buy this cd, September 22, 2001

I definitely think this cd is a must have. Of course on all cds, you have two or three cruddy songs, but on the whole, there are some bangin tunes on this cd. My personal favorite would have to be the KRS1 and Goldie joint. Sure the fatboy slim song is played out, but 5 years from now, I wouldnt mind rockin to it again. Just check out the list of artists on the cd. You cant possibly go wrong with that much talent. Big A in the Hiz-A
