5.0 out of 5 stars wake up and smell the coffee, MTV!, May 5, 2004

Attention MTV: Rap and hip hop are dying!!

Solution : Bring MTV back to showing videos from all different genres.

Also, great way to make a ton of money here.....re-release DVD's of classic 1980's videos. People like me who long for the days of big hair, british invasions will easily plop down 24.95 for a DVD compliation of these great videos (ie, Bryan Adams, The Cars, ect ect). I know MTV now is an advertisement machine designed to put on as many commercials as possible and 15 second video clips to make kids buy the record or mp3, but if i remember, MTV had a much larger following back in the 80's because it was better programming

5.0 out of 5 stars LIKE OMIGOSH LIKE TOTALLLY AWESOME FER SHURR!!, May 12, 2001

With an impresssive track listing this compilation doesn't disappoint. The most valuable thing here is you get songs that are rarely (if ever) on 80's compilations (for example "Don't Put Another Dime in the Juxebox" or "Why Me".) Now if I had a dollar for every 80's compilation that "Too Shy" or "Come On Eileen"appears on,I'd have a wad of cash. It is understandable why they are on here since they were heavily rotated videos on MTV in 1983. My only compliant is that an accompanying video compilation DVD or VHS Tape is not made. Also why not more CD compilations for the Class of 1985,1985,1986 and so on....

5.0 out of 5 stars The old days when Mtv was Music Television, January 8, 2001

Mtv was at it's best and pop was never better. This collection from 1983 has some of the best songs from that great year in music. I have many 80s collections for the various singles but this is the best. "Reap the Wild Wind" soars, "Lies" is rump moving joy, "In A Big Country", "Come on Eileen" and "Always Something There to Remind Me" are pop at their finest but some of the more obscure tracks are what make this so great: "Working Girl" and "Don't Put Another Dime in the Jukebox" are examples.

4.0 out of 5 stars From The Days When Synth-Pop Ruled The Earth..., February 10, 2000
This review is from: Mtv Class of 1983 (Audio CD)
Listening to these 30 songs from 1983 (when MTV began dominating pop culture) you can only be reminded that the music, without the obvious benefit of distinctive video, somehow stayed true to its roots.

Synthesized horns, strings and drums dominated the songs here, many of which reworked (or actually were) hits from earlier. Synthesizers gassed up Motown redux (Human League's "Mirror Man") Beatlesque pop (Modern English) Philly soul (Spandau Ballet) a Bacharach-David classic (Naked Eyes), girl groups (The Flirts, Scandal, Sparks & Jane Weidlin). And then we had songs that would've been novelty hits anytime (Wall of Voodoo, the have-to-hear-to-believe "I Eat Cannibals")

Pre-MTV artists also exploited the new video style (Bowie's most emotional performance on "China Girl," the Pretenders' sad farewell to yesterday, "Back On The Chain Gang"). But the most intriguing song (to these ears at least) was Planet P's "Why Me?" It featured a great solo vocal by Tony Carey, a "Space Oddity" style narrative and the funkiest synth track Pink Floyd never made. It was good hearing (and mentally seeing the video again) it on this entertaining, inconsequential collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a real FIND!, December 28, 2000
This review is from: Mtv Class of 1983 (Audio CD)
This is a great collection and worth every penny. There is a good range of material available on these 2 CDs, and it is worth adding to your collection if you are missing those good old days of the 80's new wave and rock! I only wish this CD was part of a collection of CD's, like Class of 82, Class of 84 etc, because if it was, I would buy them for sure!

4.0 out of 5 stars above average compilation of new wave, December 9, 1999

With all mammoth compilations, there is a risk of having more filler and/or overplayed material than real gems. This is such the case with this compilation. Most of the stuff on this compilation is rather good, but either overplayed or rates a few listens. The real gems are found mostly on the second disc, with "Working Girl" and "Jukebox (Don't Put Another Dime)" as the really passionate delights. Some other good material on this compilation: "Talking in Your Sleep", "Love My Way", "Twilight Zone", "Mexican Radio", "Why Me?", "Burning Down the House", "Back on the Chain Gang" (nearly spoiled by the godawful Selena version), and "Goodbye to You". Buy if you really really like new wave.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT RETRO!, June 12, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Mtv Class of 1983 (Audio CD)
Unlike other 80's CDs where there is only one or two good songs, all of these are classics. With 30 songs instead of 8 or ten, I was very happy. Hopefully they will make more of this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars This compilation is better than most., December 18, 1999
This review is from: Mtv Class of 1983 (Audio CD)
Most multiartist compilations of early 80s music are usually about 25% good songs, with the rest being filler. This one is different. Most of the songs on here are worth listening to. And I was especially pleased to finally have the song "Goodbye to You" by Scandal. The day that I bought this I programmed my CD player to repeat that one song and I listened to it for about an hour. I was 12 years old in 1983, and I had MTV then, and so I remember most of these songs from their original release. But I liked the music from 1982 even better, and I wish that they would release a compilation of songs that were popular on MTV from that year, too. Some suggested songs that I like would be Rock the Casbah, Hungry Like the Wolf, Eye of the Tiger, Abracababra, Don't You Want Me, Hold Me, The Other Woman, You Should Hear How She Talks About You, I Love Rock and Roll, Ebony and Ivory, and Maneater. Just a suggestion, in case anybody at Rhino is reading this!
