4.0 out of 5 stars HELL OF A TRIP!!!
If you don't like "alternative" (i.e.: "watered-down" punk/metal/??), then forget this collection. If you have fond memories of the 90's or appreciate its combination of excessive rebellion and good-heartedness and think of it as a more recent (although perhaps pointless) happenstence of what was occuring in the late '60's and early '70's, you'll LOVE this combination...

3.0 out of 5 stars 1000 years?
Why does a compilation CD consisting entirely of music from the past 15 years claim to cover 1000? - I can't wait till this millenium nonsense ends.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Thoughtless and Random attempt at compilation, June 28, 2001

Admittedly, this album is not trying to document the history of rock. Instead, it's trying to generate some afterglow and some profits from a truly collection of media friendly bands that have shaped MTV over the past 15 years. The problem lies in the execution. Instead of bothering to think about their music selection and choose musical or visual pioneers, they seem to have chosen random tunes out of the first box they came across. This set lacks unity, passion, and most of all, meaning. You're better off finding your old "mix tapes" than bothering with this happenstance collection of tunes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the worst rock compilation ever!, March 4, 2001

Why was this made? This sums up rock terribly and is a disgraceful attempt by MTV. They put some completely terrible music on here that I don't think anyone wants to remember!! Why is The Cult, Jesus Jones, Faith No More, and INXS on here? Those songs are terrible!!!!! There is no representation of any grudge,(except Candelbox which is the worst grudge band without question)punk, or metal. Of all that they had to chose from this is absolutely horrible! And the last track by The Pretenders, should not be on their for any reason! How about Led Zepplin or The Who? MTV has lost all of my respect, do not buy this album!!!!

"Round Here" is hands down one of my fav. Counting Crows tunes (along w/ "A Long December", which made me cry when hearing it shortly after graduation and realizing I'd probably never meet my "true-love" again since we never really "fell" in love with each other, but rather I admired her from a distance...) and also one of my FAVORITE SONGS of the 90's...the cover art of "Across A Wire: Live In New York" and "Round Here" go together like goth-pals..."Far Behind" reminds me of that little-known Greg Araki gem of a movie titled NOWHERE (although "Far Behind" wasn't on the soundtrack...) b/c of its vision of friendship gone astray and it's mirroring of rebellion etc.; "Right Here, Right Now" by Jesus Jones is kind of a left-field classic, period!...and "Been Caught Stealing" IS (if you argue with me I swear I'll death you!) A CLASSIC!!!!!! although i personally don't care of Jane's Addiction as a band...and so on and so forth. If you don't like this album, they probably weren't marketing it to people such as you...why the hell would MTV "First 1000 Years/Rock" put Led Zepplin and The Who on there? Leave that to Rolling Stone for Christ's Sake! Those guys are before MTV's time...New Wave and/or Alternative are the things that have kept the "rock" audience of MTV loyal...and who is anyone but the people who made the compilation and the holders of the copyright(s) of this compilation (not the songs on it) to question the title of the album? They can name this album WTF they want!!! If you think you're so cool to complain about that, why don't I Just start preaching at all you for buying an album with a reference to INCEST (remember Nirvana???). Or how 'bout crying on and on 'cause it just doesn't make any damn sense to call an album "Nevermind" except to annoy the hell of out of NITPICKERS!!!! I don't rate this 5 stars, 'cause although it's a damn good alternative CD, it still could have a been damn better album!! Amen.

1.0 out of 5 stars You've got to be kidding..., March 31, 2001
This review is from: Mtv First 1000 Years: Rock (Audio CD)
I can't believe I bought this. A rock compilation from the people at MTV, whose musical vocabulary doesn't reach past NSYNC or Backstreet Boys? Not a good combination. I also do not believe that this compilation is worth calling "The first 1000 years." First 1000 years? More like the last ten years! First, music wasn't around 1000 years ago, but rather MTV decided to put it, because the super-duper millenium was coming to an end. And MTV, if you're going to make a compilation of the best rock songs of all time, leave Beck, Garbage, and INXS off of it. What happened to Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Who, Metallica, or even Nirvana? Are they not what you call the best rock of the past 1000 years? You might as well put Michael Jackson on this comp. I'm guessing that MTV wanted to make this compilation aimed at the younger generation, like everything else that MTV does. Songs by Metallica and Nirvana would scare away the pre-pubescent teenyboppers that surround MTV Studios everyday. The bottom line: DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT purchase this album. It's just another way for MTV to make money, and thats why this compilation, and MTV for that matter, is horrible.

3.0 out of 5 stars This album is okay not great, May 3, 2000

This album is okay but is selection of songs are not very good. I wish they had Metallica on the album or Alice In Chains, or Pearl Jam, Offspring on these albums because these four band's are all very good and they made an impact on the music scene during the last fifteen years.
