The Best Non-Classical CD I Own,
By Dominic (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: MTV Unplugged (Audio CD)
First of all, I'm not really sure what is up with the other reviews--this guy and his music are all great. Just trust me on that one.For those who don't know, this is the album from the concert he did for MTV's Unplugged. I've seen it on video, and bought the CD a few months ago. It's basically a collection of some of his best songs from his previous albums from the last few years, with a twist on them to make them sound more, well, unplugged; i.e., no synthesizers, minimal guitar amplification, et cetera. I had never heard any of these songs before, and when I listened to it for the first time, I automatically fell in love with about four songs. Over the last few months that I've owned this CD, I've gotten used to, and eventually become enamored with the rest. The order of the songs is not how the concert went, but is strategically placed for the listener. I'll do my best to provide a brief synopsis and rough transation of each title. "Cuando Nadie Me Ve," or "When No One Sees Me" is a slow, great ballad with a lot of piano, and a large focus on Alejandro and his voice. "Y Solo se Me Ocurre Amarte" or "And All I Can Do is Love You," is one of his most popular songs that came out within the last few years, a little faster than the opening ballad, but with a great beat, fantastic lyrics, great bridge and closing. "Amiga Mia" or "Friend of Mine" is about a girl who he likes who is (assumedly) involved with another guy who doesn't treat her as well as her friend thinks she should be treated. Great song, good message. "Se le Apago la Luz" "The Light was Turned Off" is one of my favorites, with a great melody, powerful lyrics--definitely one to play if you're looking to cry. "Quisiera Ser" or "I'd Love to Be," is an upbeat song about (a common theme) a guy and a girl and them being in love, great romantic stuff. "Aprendiz" or "I Learned" is a song about break up and revenge. It's got a neat melody, great beat---I used to salsa with my girlfriend to it---and fun bridge. "Quiero Morir en Tu Veneno" or "I Want to Die in Your Poision" (don't worry, it's a happy song) is my second favorite on the album. It has a fantastic intro with a sort of African beat to it (much different than the original version) great modulation on the key change during the bridge, and unforgettable lyrics. "Como Te Echo de Menos" or "How We've Come Along" is another great song about love. "Corazon Partio" or "Broken Heart" is probably his most popular song from recent memory---great beat, great lyrics, popular with the ladies--all come together for one of the most fun songs on the CD. "Siempre es de Noche" or "It's Always Night" is my favorite song on the CD--a great story-type song about him and a woman he knows who has a secret relationship with him, fun to listen to. "Toca para Mi" or "Play for Me" is another popular, slow ballad--great lyrics, another tear jerker. "Todo Lo Que Fui es Todo Lo Que Soy," or "All I Was is All I Am," is a neat little jazz-ish song---brings a smile to your face, and you can tell it's one of his favorites with the little remarks he makes in the background. He was scheduled to perform this concert on September the 14th, 2001, or something like that, but because of the events of the time, it was postponed---the rescheduled concert had a new song, "Todo es de Color." It's a solo for him and his flamenco guitarist, who is fantastic by the way on this song. It talks about the world, God, why things happen, and is incredibly interesting to listen to---a really gypsy sound. That raps it up. Like I said, a fantastic compilation, well done vocals, well written lyrics, fun to listen to, good music. Buy it, I guarantee you won't be dissapointed.

A Superb Live Album,
By Kimberly Bennett (Toronto, ON Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: MTV Unplugged (Audio CD)
I became an Alejandro Sanz fan earlier this year after hearing him sing with Destiny's Child on the Grammy Awards broadcast in February and I have been hooked ever since. This album is totally beautiful- musically as well as lyrically (eventhough my understanding of Spanish is limited). The most moving track on this album however is "Y Solo Se Me Ocurre Amarte" (And the Only Thing I Could Do Was Love You)- a tribute to his newborn daughter. Sanz is someone I wish the English-speaking world was more familiar with. He has so much to offer with his music. I am almost upset that I hadn't heard of him before. I recommend this album to anyone starting out in the "Sanz Experience". I look forward to more of his albums in the future.

Wonderful album,

The 1st time I saw Alejandro Sanz was when he performed with Destiny's Child on an awards show. I was blown away by his music and charm. The next day, I bought this album. Although I can't understand a word of spanish, the melodies and instrumentation are exceptional. Alejandro's voice is sensual and full of emotion. He is an excellent singer/songwriter. I purchased a later album, and once again, I was not disappointed. He only improves with age.

A Canadian Reaction,

This CD is fantastic. You are able to listen to the passion that he puts into his music. He's voice is incredible and so unique from the standard pop scence here in North America. Unfortunately, he is not very well known here in Canada. Hopefully he continues to sing spanish music, so Canadians can experience the wonderful music of Alejandro Sanz. He is truly one of the only artists that put all thier mind, soul and passion into their lyrics. I agree with one of the reviews, he shouldn't crossover b/c that will kill the passion of his lyrics.

Mr. Sanz Excelled Himself,
This review is from: MTV Unplugged (Audio CD)
I've been a fan of Sanz for about a year now. I thought he was the spanish version of Luis Miguel which for me that was awful. I realized I was so wrong until I saw him play "Corazon Partio" acoustic(alone with his guitar)on MTV a couple of years back (He won my respect). Later with his "Alma Al Aire" album, he showed what a true artist he is. Now the Unplugged comes and he shows us what a great singer/songwriter he is. Every song excels it's previous versions. The new song he wrote for his daughter "Y Solo Se Me Ocurre Amarte" is already a hit. Old songs like "Se Le Apago La Luz","Como Te Echo De Menos" really shine with top class musicians playing along. I like the lyrical additions he made to some songs. This album is a most have for any Sanz fan and also a must have for newbies who want to see what all the fuss is about. "Amiga Mia", "Quisiera Ser", "Aprendiz", "Quiero Morir En Tu Veneno" are songs perfomed at its best. Every song is performed from the heart and with honesty. Although I think Sanz should have been left alone playing a couple of songs with his guitar. We only got to see that once, and guitar players love that. In my opinion, it was the best Unplugged of all in the Latin American Series. He shouldn't be labeled as a pop artist, he is right there with all the great (artists) singer/songwriters in the latin world(arjona, beto cuevas, cerati, aleks syntek) and the whole world. Congratulations and Keep the Good Job, Mr.Sanz!

what's with the background singers?,
By A Customer
This review is from: MTV Unplugged (Audio CD)
I bought this cd on a reccommendation from someone else, and I found that I really do like Alejandro's voice and manner of singing and lyricism...it's all chill like and kinda bordering on intellectual. But what the he-- is up with those background singers??? they make me freakin laugh they are so cheesy! if he just got rid of those background singers, alejandro sanz would rock. so basically, this is a cool album, with some great songs on it...but be prepared for some cheesiness you are gonna have to ignore to enjoy it.
