A Good Mix,
This review is from: Much Music: Big Shiny Tunes 10 (Audio CD)
Big Shiny Tunes Ten is the latest in this Much Music series. While the "Much Dance" discs are definately more pop/hip-hop/R&B laden, "Big Shiny Tunes" is most decidedly rock. The songs on here are good, and there is a nice vareity, too.
1. My Chemical Romance- Helena: I really like this song, possibly because I saw the video first, and it's really good. MCR has, as one Much VJ likes to call it, "epic choruses," and the whole song blends really well. 2. Coldplay- Speed of Sound: another song that I'm quite fond of, maybe not as hard rock as most of the other songs on this record, but the piano riff is very catchy and the chorus is amazing!! 3. The Killers- All These Things That I've Done: Just read my review for this song on the "Hot Fuss" album. All I can say is that if they can get the entire English Live 8 crowd to sing, "I've got soul, but I'm not a soldier" with them, they're good. 4. The Used- All That I've Got: Apparently 2005 was the year of the pop-punk power ballads. And when The Used start riding the wave, you know there's something behind it. "All That I've Got" is a really interesting song. However, the omission of one of the verses really seemsto leave a gaping hole in it. 5. Nickelback- Fight for All the Wrong Reasons: Now, apart from the fact that Nickelback isn't my favorite group, this song really isn't my style. I can't get into it, maybe because it's too rock-y. It's not awful, but certainly not my favorite song on the disc. 6.Weezer- Beverly Hills: Another really great song, the wa wa guitar sounds incredible, and Weezer always seems to be having fun. 7. Sum 41- Some Say: The drum fill before the chorus sounds too hard rock for this style of song, but the lyrics are good, and Sum 41 is just a great Canadian band. 8. Seether- The Remedy: I really like the minor guitar line in here, and it's an overall good rock song. 9. Billy Talent- Nothing to Lose: This song is certainly more serious than a lot of the songs on here, talking about teen suicide. It has a really great message, and I even don't mind the screaming, which is saying something. 10. Bedouin Soundclash- When the Night Feels My Song: This song may not exactly seem to fit in on this album, but it's extremely good. Really simple, yet the style is undeniably unique (with influences from the diverse Toronto ethnic cultures) and the harmony on the chorus is amazing. 11. Simple Plan- Untitled (How Could This Happen to Me?): So, it's not really untitled, and the stoyline's not really that different from any of their other songs. However, the mellowness of it doesn't make it come off as sounding quite so whiny, and I happen to like these guys. 12. Gorillaz- Feel Good, Inc.: I LOVE THIS SONG!!! It's a very interesting fusion of bass-driven hip=hop, mellow pop, and spacey synth. The parts fuse together incredibly well, and the bass line is extremely catchy. 13. Theory of a Deadman- Santa Monica: This was the first song of theirs I truly liked, as it was very toned down. Nice melody, even if they do sound a lot like Nickelback. 14. Alexis on Fire- No Transitory: I love the singing, but, as I've stated screaming is not my thing. 15. Hot, Hot Heat- Middle of Nowhere: Their sound is very interesting, and it's a good song with a nice melody, too. 16. Queens of the Stone Age- Little Sister: This song is definately more about the guitar solo than the singing, but, because the solo is good, it doesn't really matter. 17. Mobile- Montreal Calling: A good new group to come out of (you guessed it) Montreal, I think they have real potential. The song is catchy, with good harmonies and musical fills. Admittedly, I haven't listened to the last K-os and Sam Roberts compilation much, because I don't really like hip hop, but it's not a bad song if you do.
