5.0 out of 5 stars A RICHLY DETAILED TRIBUTE TO MUCHA, April 29, 2005
This review is from: Mucha (Hardcover)

What a marvelous collection! These Art Noveau posters by the famed Czech artist Alphonse Mucha are visual feasts, appealing, curvaceous, sinuous. Rich in color and line they arrest the eye. Of the 222 colour illustrations, one would be hard pressed to select a favorite; aficionados will simply return to the volume again and again to enjoy.

Born in rural Moravia in 1860, Mucha found his world in Paris where he was commissioned to do a poster for famed actress Sarah Bernhardt. It was so well received that "Le style Mucha" was born. Of course, it didn't happen overnight but along the way he came to know other artists such as Gauguin and Strindberg who influenced his work.

As if his fame as a poster artist were not enough, he also ventured into architecture, and also created beautiful drawings and pastels replete with symbolism. As he matured he would paint monumental canvases of the Slav Epic, lasting evidence of his patriotism.

In the belief that art influenced all of life his work sends a message of peace and harmony, which is especially noted in his allegorical scenes.

Included in this keepsake volume are Mucha's photographs, those of models, those taken on study trips, and those taken of his family. Photography is one more aspect of this artist's genius.

Artist, philosopher, patriot, dreamer, Mucha is unforgettable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't get better than this., May 16, 2006
This review is from: Mucha (Hardcover)
This book has it all lots of pictures as well as interesting information on Mucha and his work. I feel that it shows how he and his work became an icon of Art Nouveau. It is not just posters and panels that are covered it goes into every aspect of Mucha's work. There is information and pictures on "The Slav Epic", jewellery, lead light pastels, drawings and more. I would recommend this book to anyone that loves Mucha or Art Nouveau.

I bought this book as a gift for a Mucha fan. It's a great price for such a beautiful hardcover book. The high quality glossy pages vividly exhibit the many prints and photographs represented. There is also ample and varied biographical information about Alphonse Mucha's life and career. It's a great book for any art-nuveau fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but wish I had my book from prague, February 27, 2007

This book is great for those who do not have a great book on Mucha. The book contains a superior history of Mucha's life and intro the Art Neuvou period(Art Nuvo). Mucha should be credited with the entire period in my opinion.

There is wide sampling of his works, beyond that in other books. There are examples of jewelry, metal works, paintings, prints, furniture, and architecture. The images are printed very well.

All in all, this is the second best book; The best book was purchased in Prague at his museum (can't find in US...or remember name). This book had mostly paintings but I miss the superior color quality and few pictures run across two pages (a pet peeve of mine and occasional issue in this book)...this book seems to be as good as it gets here.

I was extremely happy with this. The only negative thing I have to say about this book is I wish some of the prints were larger.

This has a great collection of Mucha's artwork, and an in depth look at the mans life; including photo's of models and photo's of his own family.

If you enjoy Alphonse Mucha, this is a must own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but not perfect, March 5, 2011

This book has a nice quantity of Mucha images, but most of them are rather small, without close-ups for details. Also, though the book provides some nice information about this history of some of the works, I'm looking for a book that includes more information about the processes Mucha used as well as the symbolism featured in the works. Alas, my search continues. However, I do think this is a valuable addition to any Mucha lover's library. The amount and variety of works included is quite nice.

I concur with everyone else's opinion on this book and want to add what a great value this is for the money. All the reproductions are beautiful. As someone else has said, the book has a fine text and it also shows the breadth of Mucha's work showing sculpture and sketches as well as his famous posters. This book is jam packed with the best of Mucha and I can't recommend it highly enough for true Mucha fans. I sometimes cut up books like this for framing, but there are TOO MANY great pictures to separate them. A marvelous vision of all of his life's work with many hard to find reproductions.

Wonderful book, very good bio of the man plus a great many examples of his work. Only downfall to me is i wished the images would have been larger. But thats just me nitpicking, because i absolutely love this book. I think anyone who's a fan of Mucha should own this book. Cheers, enjoy.

I bought this as a gift for my artist wife after visiting the Mucha museum in Prague. The book was a good value from Amazon, and contains a fairly comprehensive collection of his work as well as family background and photos.
The hardcover book is nicely bound and seems decent quality construction. The large quantity and size of color plates are a pleasant surprise and a joy to look at. I like the book, and oh yes, my wife likes it too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, July 2, 2009

This review is from: Mucha (Hardcover)
I purchased this book for my husband who is an admirer of Alfonzo Mucha's work.

The book is loaded with works created by the artist and also incorporates a biography. It is a great looking hard cover and a more personal touch that a family member put the piece together.

If you liked the turn of the 20th century fashion and the styles of females captured in the wake of liberation often depicted in Art Nouveau style, Mucha's florals and scroll-work might appeal to you. Mucha is definitely one of those artists that stands alone and this book with its colourful replications are a welcome addition.
