Machito & His Orchestra- "Mucho Macho", October 15, 2000
This review is from: Mucho Macho Machito (Audio CD)
This is a great compilation most likely taken from mint condition 78 rpm singles recorded for Norman Granz' "CLEF" label in 1948 and 1949 in NYC. During those glorious years the Machito Jazz Band was at its peak, under the skillful musical direction of the great Mario Bauza, who at the time also lead the orchestra's trumpet section. The only flaw I find with this re-issue is that the sound quality needed improvement and didn't receive it. In re-issuing these priceless recordings, better masters should've been sought. Other than that it is perhaps the best compilation of Machito 1940's recordings. "Un Poquito de Tu Amor", "Asia Minor", "Cleopatra's Rhumba", "Llora Timbero", "Donkey Serenade',"St.Louis Blues",etc. are all masterpieces, the orchestration and musical arrangements and percussion are simply outstanding, but then that's what made the Machito Band outstanding and perhaps the best at that time. Don't miss this great CD.
