Amazon.com Review

Spring has arrived at Mud Flat, and everyone is rejoicing. Everyone, that is, except Morgan the bear, who gets a little grumpy when he emerges from hibernation. And Gracie and Rich the fish, who are a bit mystified by Barclay the turtle's enthusiastic announcement.
"What is 'spring,' anyway" said Rich.
"I have no idea," said Gracie. "I guess it's a turtle thing."
Everyone else, though, even crotchety Mr. Crocker, is elated at winter's demise. But is it really the end of winter?

Prolific and popular James Stevenson has produced the fifth in his Mud Flat series, which includes The Mud Flat Mystery, The Mud Flat Olympics, Heat Wave at Mud Flat, and Mud Flat April Fool. Friends new and old will be happy to get to know the many quirky animal personalities in the neighborhood, and to celebrate the joys of the season with them. From Fergus the snail to Cheryl the earthworm, Lois the duck, Carol the skunk, and Serena the butterfly, Mud Flat's residents will make any reader feel right at home. Stevenson's friendly illustrations in this nine-part book are warm and light, and full of all the giddy details of spring. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-The animals of Mud Flat are greeting spring, all in their own unique ways. When grumpy Morgan the bear awakens from hibernation, Lois the duck fools him into thinking that it's still winter. Bentley the mole accidentally burrows the first crocus right out of the ground, but then replants it. Snails, a worm, a beaver, and insects are creating dances to welcome the season, but Albert the pig's idea of celebrating is napping under a tree. The usually gruff Mr. Crocker the crocodile goes into a state of bliss when he sees and smells the flowers, but he doesn't want anyone else to know it. Then one morning, the animals wake up to a big surprise: Mud Flat is buried in spring snow, and they all go coasting. They decide that they are very lucky-this year they will have two springs. These good-natured antics are accompanied by Stevenson's trademark giggle-inducing illustrations, which greatly enhance the vignettes. The pen-and-ink and watercolor drawings of the snail, the worm, and the beaver's spring dance are particularly funny. The author's sense of humor is on target for his audience and the stories should spark discussion about signs of spring. A sensational seasonal selection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mud Flat Spring, December 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mud Flat Spring (Library Binding)
Nine brief, amusing stories about woodland animals discovering and celebrating spring - nice read aloud or useful as a beginning "chapter" book. Excellent color illustrations and recommended for students from K through the 3rd grade, as well as teachers and parents.
