5.0 out of 5 stars Stunningly Beautiful, August 20, 2004

Heard this cd on NPR... went and bought it. Amazing. Just beautiful... Darling's cello serves, somehow, miraculously, to lift the voices of the indiginous people even higher, rather than to overpower and drown them out.

This is one of those cd's that helps illustrate the addage that music truly is the global human language.

Bravo, Mr. Darling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, April 12, 2005

David Darling has done an amazing job of enhancing the traditional songs of the Wulu Bunun with his cello accompaniment. The music of the Wulu Bunun is valuable in itself but may be less accessible to Western ears. Darling's cello, however, does nothing to detract from the singers' music, and instead only supports the inherent beauty of the songs. While the attempts to blend Western and non-Western traditional music can sometimes produce scary results, in this case, the result is sublime.

4.0 out of 5 stars East meets west, April 20, 2008
This review is from: Mudanin Kata (Audio CD)
An interesting combination of voices and the cello. I'm not quite sure if the cello enhances the singing, but it does break the singing, which is attractive, but could get a bit monotonous.

5.0 out of 5 stars The sound from the heaven and the soil, July 18, 2007
This review is from: Mudanin Kata (Audio CD)
This is the best CD of Taiwanese original inhabitant I have evern listened. I am so touched by the music and the simple and beautiful lyrics, which are not existing in modern society. Tribal people live together and sing and dance together in the mountains from generation to generation. And David Darling's cello is beautifully involved in Bunun tribe.

I love especially the second and 8th songs, they are just amazingly beautiful. Fantastic! Thanks a lot to them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great revelation of an isolated cultural group......., January 5, 2007

This CD is a must for anyone interested in the music of different cultures. It is wonderful to hear the amazing singing of an isolated group of peoples...the clarity of their tone and harmonies is beautiful, and the accompanying cello work is as always outstanding...David enhances the singing, bringing voice and instrument, East and West together yet allows their music to shine through and take center stage. I thank everyone who made this CD possible.
