Book Description

January 1, 2001

"One of the precious gifts of my father's legacy was his insistence that people can turn beliefs into knowns, finding out for themselves through direct experience that they are indeed more than their physical bodies. In that spirit, this book is a fine example of another explorer's journey into profound self-discovery, and particularly to the realization that "love is the only thing in life that counts." —Laurie A. Monroe, President, The Monroe Institute

This book was written specifically for those people for whom the question of "what is real" is the most important thing in life. It is for those who have a hard time concentrating on career or family—or anything—for fear it will turn out to be illusory. It is for anyone whose life is haunted by lack of meaning. The entire point of Muddy Tracks is that the author went out searching. He trusted, and sincerely looked, and found that his trust was rewarded. And, he says, as his trust was rewarded, so will yours be.

Muddy Tracks tells some of the things that happened to him, and at every step he says to you, "Here's a resource; try this. Here's a resource; try that. When I did this, this happened. When I did that; that happened." Keeping strictly to what he has experienced, DeMarco shows how many aids we may find in life. He shows how his life was enriched by selected reading, and by dream analysis, and by interaction with friends and so-called strangers. He describes some of the unusual resources he has discovered and used, particularly in connection with out-of-body explorer Bob Monroe and The Monroe Institute.

More intimately, he tells of some of the nearly unbelievable things he has learned to do—things, he points out, that are natural human abilities, available to all. As noted British author Colin Wilson says in his introduction, "Frank's experience has been in many ways remarkable, and he has a natural gift for making it come alive."

The net result is to provide the reader with firsthand, informed reassurance that we all have our own internal guidance, which is reliable and is willing and able to come forth when welcomed. DeMarco cites his own experiences to argue that if you come to the quest in faith, the faith will be rewarded. The meaning of your life can be found, but it can only be found by you yourself. And, having found it, you will find it meaningful precisely because it will be your meaning, and not someone else's.

The age of gurus is over. It is time for us each to come into our own. Muddy Tracks will help you—and encourage you—to learn to do that.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

New Age author and publisher DeMarco (who wrote the novel Messenger as a sequel to James Hilton's Lost Horizon) presents an earnest and systematic account of his many years' journey to discover his higher self, so that his readers may do the same. DeMarco's search began in 1970 with two discrete, life-changing experiences. The first was reading Colin Wilson's (who wrote this book's introduction) SF novel The Mind Parasites, which introduced him to the idea that all humans had "unsuspected [i.e., paranormal or psychic] abilities." The second was ingesting mescaline, which convinced him that there is no such thing as coincidence. In other words, the author maintains, he acquired firsthand knowledge that we humans are eternal souls temporarily trapped in physical bodies but ultimately connected to each other and to a larger being whom conventional religions call God and New Age devotees call the Universe. Dismissing what he once thought was his destiny to become a master statesman like JFK, DeMarco devoured all the relevant literature he could get his hands on and explored such alternative practices as remote viewing and past-life regression. His epiphany came in 1992 when he attended the institute founded by his new hero, the late Bob Monroe (Ultimate Journey), a former businessman who, in his late 50s, began having spontaneous out-of-body experiences. Skeptics may as well stay away from this; DeMarco has written for New Age readers and others in search of a reality greater than the one they already know. (Feb.) Forecast: Niche publishers like Hampton Roads know how to reach their audience and, given De Marco's position as founder and-chief editor of that house, this should sell very well in the New Age market.

From Library Journal

In this book of personal paranormal experiences, which is based upon his work with Robert Monroe (Ultimate Journey), metaphysicist and Hampton Roads Publishing founder DeMarco artfully shares psychic "knowledge" of truth rather than interpretations or beliefs. The author probes the preternatural gamut from dream analysis, channeling, and automatic writing to out-of-body experiences, hemispheric synchronization, distance healing, and reincarnation as well as more traditional fare like prayer and meditation. Although the content is a bit gaping, DeMarco shows readers by example how to cultivate deeper connections with a greater, wiser being. Frank discussion of concepts such as "psychic's disease" and the "no-guru zone" balances this tale with the author's contention that extrasensory possibilities exist for all. DeMarco conclusively argues that if people can carefully integrate their past and present multilayered memories to create more conscious, less isolated lives, their "muddy footprints" will bring about a world where fewer social problems exist. Recommended for the popular parapsychology collections of public and academic libraries. Lisa Liquori, Syracuse, NY

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to alternative reality exploration, February 11, 2001
This review is from: Muddy Tracks: Exploring an Unsuspected Reality (Hardcover)
There are , in the United States, two names that stand out as pioneers in exploring the out of body state- Sylvan Muldoon and Robert Monroe. Those of us, and the numbers are increasing, who are fascinated by this phenomena and may have experience of it, wil readily acknowledge the developmental help these writers provided in their various books.Frank DeMarco has provided a fascinating, and deeply personal, account of his experience at the Monroe Institute in Virginia where he particpated in the Gateway, Guidelines and Lifelines programs which utilise Monroe's Hemi-Sync process where various tapes assist the physical brain to accomodate the spiritual production of various phenomena - including the out of body experience. There have been a number of books already published by such as Ken Eagle Feather and Bruce Moen which go into some depth describing the same experiences at the Monroe Institute. But , anyone with a rough idea of the aims and intention behind the various programs ,quickly realises that absolutely any experience can be produced and is very much linked to the individual's personal history..not only in this life but in previous incarnations too.DeMarco goes into considerable and fascinating detail des cribing his reincarnational links with some fellow students at the Institute which were revealed to him in a progressive manner during the tape exercises. As someone who has been fortunate to experience many and varied out of body experiences and who intends to particpate in the Gateway experience I found this an eminently helpful book and will be a welcome read for those interested in astral projection, altered states of consciousness, reincarnational experiences and one man's philosophical quest to find the turth about himself and his essential nature. It is a touchingly honest and helpfully revealing account of Frank DeMarco's spiritual journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Muddy Tracks, May 4, 2003
This review is from: Muddy Tracks: Exploring an Unsuspected Reality (Hardcover)
Frank DeMarco has spent years searching for the meaning of life and sorting reality from illusion. Muddy Tracks is the chronicle of his quest for answers and self-discovery. One day he asked the universe, "Who am I?" and received "Muddy footprints in the grass" as an answer.

He interpreted this to mean that his experiences could show others the path he'd taken, that he was "here to show you that others have passed through what may appear to be a trackless wilderness [and] to encourage others to do some exploring." His own explorations led him to the knowledge that we are all part of a larger being, and that only our bodies die-our souls live on.

Through the larger being, we are all connected. This connection makes phenomena like psychic abilities, out-of-body experiences, ghosts, and distant healing available to all who want those experiences and abilities. DeMarco is guided on a continual basis by spiritual advisors he calls "The Gentlemen Upstairs." That kind of guidance is also available to others.

DeMarco emphasizes that the answers he received and experiences he had were strictly his own. Everyone must search for their own unique answers. His purpose is to simply show what he tried and what happened as a result. He says his intention is to present "a firsthand narrative of what I've learned and how I use it."

One of his primary resources was The Monroe Institute in Virginia, where students learn how to achieve altered states of consciousness and engage in out-of-body experiences. He provides extensive details of his experiences at the Institute in the hopes of providing others with "the tools and incentive to discover first hand that we, individually and collectively, are more than we have ever believed possible."

In Muddy Tracks, DeMarco has written "an honest and engaging account" for all those questioning the meaning of life and reality.

4.0 out of 5 stars A finger pointing to the moon, February 22, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Muddy Tracks: Exploring an Unsuspected Reality (Hardcover)
Frank is a journalist, an editor, an author, but more to the point here a out-of-body traveler and a loving human being. He shares his growth and journeys with us that we may see how many more things are possible in this life. He has explored and journaled his dream life, has directly connected with his spirit guidance (which he calls The Gentlemen Upstairs) and has ventured into several "past" lives. Samples of the guidance received in the beginning as automatic writing are injected as appropriate. After his training at the Monroe Institute his life blossomed even more to encompass healing, rescue work and travel to the focus levels described by Robert Monroe in his writings. As co-founder of Hampton Roads Publishing Company he has been instrumental in bringing many New Age authors to public attention.
The book is literate without being pedantic and is full of many insights gleaned from the author's journeys. Here is a quick summary from a final chapter called Interim Report: "We are immortal spirits temporarily inhabiting bodies... This life is not our only life... We "individuals" are all connected one to another... We as individuals are fragments of a larger being that cares about us and can be trusted... Nonetheless, this larger being sees things differently... The larger being is a source of foresight and wisdom... The larger contacts us... We can contact the larger being... Thus our lives need not be disconnected and solitary... Nevertheless, we may often lose communication (but the connection cannot be severed.)"
Frank is very easy going in his presentation. This is not a hard sell. He knows you will have to experience these things yourself to appreciate their value and reality. Students of metaphysics will not find anything earth-shattering here. The pace does not have the excitement found in some other books. It is an easy read, a gentle style. Anyone curious about the Monroe Institute offerings will find value here. This book is not "proof of anything," but is instead a suggestion that life is more magical than you may have thought--a finger pointing to the moon.
