GOB Gets it Right - Younger Bands Take Note,

Now, THIS is how you make a mature sounding punk rock record without losing any of your edge. Green Day tried to do it, but turned out an uneven (but at times spectacular) rock-opera. Blink-182 tried it in 2003 and succeeded but has since split into separate bands, +44 and the dreadful Angels and Airwaves. Don't even get me started on Good Charlotte. Unlike all the pretenders out there, GOB manages to come up with a set of catchy hooks and big crunchy chunks of punk rock guitar. The single "Prescription" is a highlight, as are the midtempo "Banshee Song" and the guitar-studded pop-punk of "Wake Up." GOB rarely misses the mark here, and the best part about it is that the lyrics are not self-absorbed with pretention and paranoia. They don't whine about politicians or other bands on the scene, and certainly don't try to please the critics. The f*** the world approach to their earlier records has been replaced by socially conscious but equally energetic and aggressive power punk in the vein of Social Distortion and early Offspring. It is nice to hear a band like this stick to their roots as opposed to trying to channel their inner "U2" or get lost in a sea of whiny emo garbage. In the years that have passed between their last release and this album, the punk rock scene has changed for the worse and GOB has evidently become better. If you are looking for a real, no-holds barred, punk rock gem in an era of carbon copies, this original band is more than just a quick listen. They have much to say, and younger bands would be the wiser by lending their ears to GOB on this 2007 release.

Kind of different from the usual stuff, a little more political heavy, but the songs still sound awesome and I love listening to it all the time

Let me begin by saying I listen to a ton of music, and this album might be in my top 10.The melodies are ridiculously catchy and everything comes together perfectly on this CD. I have been a fan of GOB for a while now and have to admit I was probably always a little more into their more "poppy" punk stuff (mainly songs like the ones off Foot in Mouth). This CD however feels much "heavier" at most times and I have to admit, a few particular songs took me a little while to get used to, but after a week, this CD had taken over my life(Or at least dominated position #1 in my car's CD changer). The best description of this CD is this: If Sum 41(who are one of my favorite bands) hadn't put out, what is in my opinion The complete garbage collection known as Underclass Hero, it would've sounded like this album. It is what Sum 41 should have aspired to be.I don't give 5 stars to just any album either.

..here in America I mean. They are one of my favorite bands, but nobody I've talked to knows them. After a 4 year wait, Gob is back!! It starts off with the awesome "We're All Dying", and doesn't let up.
1.We're All Dying 5/5-Great, Great, song. One of my favorites. 2.War Is a Cemetery 5/5-Pretty cool song, the chorus is pretty good too. 3.Dead End Love 4/5-Not one of my favs, but still pretty good. 4.Prescription 4/5-Good chorus. 5.Underground 5/5-Another one of my favs, great guitar work. 6.Still Feel Nothing 5/5-Slow intro, then kicks up in the chorus. 7.Banshee Song 5/5-One of the best on the CD. 8.18 4/5-Pretty good. 9.About My Summer 5/5 10.Face the Ashes 5/5-Love the intro. 11.Open Wounds 4/5-Another slow song. 12.Wake Up 5/5-Good, love the lyrics. |
