Longtime D.J. and producer of Cypress Hill, Muggs stepped out for a solo project to work with various artists on a compilation entitled The Soul Assassins, Chapter I. This twelve track release was all produced by Muggs himself with an East Coast feel. Each track were tailored for each artist and not done sporadically. For the newcomers La The Darkman's "Devil In A Blue Dress" is simple enough to compliment the anti-thug lyrics. Opposite that, "Life Is Tragic" by Infamous Mobb over a violin loops for these Queens-bridge emcees / rapper for combat. Muggs funk loop with an almost muted drum track for Call O' Da Wild's "New York Undercover". Dr. Dre & B Real teamed up for the loud sample "Puppet Master" that was a good collaboration for the West Coast. Other artist on here has all original material that cannot be found on their albums. Fans of these artists and hip-hop / rap lovers will appreciate Muggs' effort.

4.0 out of 5 stars underrated, January 7, 2001

This review is from: Muggs Presents... The Soul Assassins Chapter I (Audio CD)
dj muggs has been one of the most underrated producers in hip hop since cypress came out with their first disc. with this cd he showcases his ability to make his tracks fit the artist. with a slew of some of todays best mcs from the west, east and south, u cant go wrong. songs that stand out are goodie mobs decision, decisions which comes across with a positive message, especiall cee-lo's verse. the rza and gza spit hot lyrics over an amped up beat and wu-affiliate la the darkman comes with a bangin song of his own. mobb deep and infamous mobb deliver hot tracks as usual and call of da wild, though ive never heard of him before has a nice little song also. wyclef ends the album on a positive note with his song john 3:16. this album is not like your average cypress hill album, it is a nicely put together and talented hip hop collective that deserves some recognition

4.0 out of 5 stars Muggs shows his knowledge again., June 21, 1998

Muggs shows his knowledge again. There is a shame that there is only one cypress hill song and B-Real sings only some seconds.

This album allows Muggs to shine. He has nothing holding him to recreate the Cypress Hill sound. He was able to expand the horizons of his talent and experiment with new stuff. We get to see how his beats mix with the flows of other MCs. It's great!

The Puppet Master with Dr. Dre and B-Real opens this album with a bang. Dre's hard hitting lyrics flow smoothly over Muggs beats. Not the deep pounding bass of Dre's production, but harder stuff than normally found on a Cypress Hill album.

John 3:16 with Wyclef was definitely a departure from Muggs usual fare. Combined with the Wyclef's lyrics, this is a laid back protest against violence. Great stuff.

Probably my favorite song on the album is La the Darkman's Devil in a Blue Dress. La and Muggs seem to mesh perfectly. This was a seamless composition that had me listening to the song over and over. This song alone made the album worth buying.

I hope to see Muggs do another album like this. His production skills are among the best in the industry and it's great hearing other MCs layin' their vocals over his beats.

Astonoshing music, Muggs beats take you further than just Cypresshill vocals. Muggs has the type of tempo that makes any rapper's voice go in perfect harmony.

This album proved that Muggs has an eye for talent. He has done albums with Tricky, Funkdoobiest, Cypress Hill of course, and now these guys. Muggs has the skillz to make even a bad rhymer sound ill, and with this team of all-stars, Muggs has done it again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Listen to this f#$#ing album and hail the king of beats., April 22, 1999

Muggs' metamorphisis(so far), First the funk based Cypress Hill debut, then the rap anthems of Black Sunday, followed by the ground breaking Hip-Hop of Temples of Boom and now this! A collage of eerie, hypnotic Trip-Hop beats masterfully blended with vocals from mic murderers such as Mobb Deep, the GZA and Goodie Mobb(best track on album).
