Organic Crushed Tomatoes, Fire Roasted

Where there's smoke there's flavor!

We start with the sweetest tomatoes you'll ever taste. Rich, vine-ripened organic tomatoes, grown nature's way with California sunshine and fertile soil. The pick of the crop is then gently roasted over an open flame for a naturally sweet and smoky flavor.

Quite possibly the world's best tomatoes - the perfect ingredient for delicious, healthy living. Accent your favorite dishes with the sultry, smoky flavor of Muir Glen Fire Roasted Tomatoes.

We use a lovely blend of natural hardwoods in our open-flame searing and smoking process. The result is crushed tomatoes with mouth-watering flavor. You'll love them in recipes, hot or cold.

The "organic" food label identifies food grown with practices that:

  • Don't use synthetic pesticides, herbicides and soil fumigants
  • Don't use genetic engineering
  • Don't use sewage sludge as fertilizer
  • Do improve the quality and fertility of the soil
  • Do protect water quality
  • Do reduce soil erosion
  • Do rely on natural biological systems for pest and weed control
  • Do reduce the impact of agriculture on our environment
  • Do produce high quality, great tasting food

I use canned tomatoes in, well, nearly most things I cook. I tend to stock up on the 32oz cans of whole plum tomatoes but sometimes you just need a little less, and the fire-roasted flavor can be a nice touch. I prefer to buy organic wherever possible and reasonable, and I like most Muir Glen products. These tomatoes are good, though they are packed in more of a water than sauce, so I always drain them before use. Some other canned tomato products I will dump straight into the pot, but I don't think these are great for that. They also aren't ideal for making tomato sauces but I use them for lots of other things: adding some tomato to bean chilis, throwing together a quick salsa, making spanish rice, adding to soups or stews, and (this is seriously delicious) stirring into a prepared batch of Annie's mac and cheese, along with a can of chickpeas. If you haven't tried this, it is SO good for a quick meal.
Great pantry staple, at a MUCH better price with subscribe and save than you'd pay at the grocery store.

This is a ditto of my other Muir Glen tomato reviews, but I feel the same way about all of them, so here goes...I've generally avoided red sauces and anything with canned tomatoes, but Cook's Illustrated's recipe for almost-fresh pasta sauce made with these (or any Muir Glen tomatoes) has changed me for life. I'm also buying organic whenever I can, so now I've started experimenting with other tomato recipes using these and am loving them. My friends and family laugh at me when I do "subscribe and save" and buy a case at a time, but it's a great bargain and there's always a can (or more) on the basement shelf.

I really wanted to start making my own spaghetti sauce, but every time I tried using regular diced tomatoes from the supermarket, it ended up orange in color. It's surprising how much of an effect color can have when it comes to food. Orange spaghetti sauce is just, well, unappetizing.

These tomatoes were a bit pricier than store brand diced tomatoes, but they have the most amazing color. My spaghetti sauces made with these turn out a lovely deep, dark red. (Sauté an onion in olive oil, add a little garlic if you prefer, pour in from 1/2 to 1 cup of red wine and cook until it's reduced in volume, then add a can or two of these fire roasted crushed tomatoes and simmer for awhile. Add herbs -- try fennel seeds, or a generic "Italian seasoning" also works. You can use the sauce over pasta or you can use it as the tomato sauce for lasagna.)

I've also used these tomatoes in soups and rice dishes. They work pretty much anywhere you would use canned tomatoes. I love the flavor. It's also nice that they're organic (and now Muir Glen no longer uses BPA in their can linings). It's so hard to find good fresh tomatoes in the supermarket these days that it's wonderful to have these as an alternative. I always keep a couple of cans on hand (they're also great to have around for those late-in-the-week dinners when there aren't too many fresh vegetables left in the house).

It's organic cruahed tomatoes in a can - simple, right? Our local grocery has a house brand that is also organic and priced a bit below the Muir Glen brand. The difference? You guessed it -- the fire roasting. The taste difference is subtle, but if you use this in a recipe that leaves the crushed tomato taste exposed, you'll be pleasantly surprised. A nice touch, and hats off to the genie in the can.

There's a price difference vs. standard organic fare, not worth it for the penny-pinching world if you are furloughed government employee as of the writing of this review, but for other folks it will be worth the difference.

Received a 12 can case of these tomatoes yesterday. Several cans were dented. One can, though sealed and undented, was unfilled. Amazon's packaging was intact; obviously, there had been problems at the canning facility. I have purchased these tomatoes many times before, from local markets as well as Amazon, and have never before encountered defects of this or any other kind. However, given recent well-publicized problems with food-borne illnesses arising from sloppy practices at other food packers and canners, I am leaning toward avoiding this brand in the future.

I ordered this case because at the top of the page it clearly states "no salt added" so someone please explain why the can not only lists salt as an ingredient, the sodium content is 110mg/serving. If it had no added salt it would be somewhere around 25-30mg. I am not happy, not happy at all.

I have a standing order for these tomatoes. They are simply the best. I could eat them right from the can, and I wouldn't do that with any other brand of canned tomatoes. Every recipe calling for tomatoes is improved with these. Highly recommend.

I'm not a big fan of tomatoes...but for certain broths (and chili base), they're used as a staple ingredient... The best thing about these is that they don't taste sweet like some other canned tomatoes.
