3.0 out of 5 stars Soundtrack should be a Soundtrack
Although not generally a fan of animated films, I very much enjoy Mulan. To re-experience this enjoyment, I will purchase the soundtrack; however, I am disappointed by two factors. One, the tracks are not in "movie order"; instead, they are organized by vocal and score. Two, I join others in saying, "Why the pop version?" Yuck.

Delighted,...

5.0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL, July 15, 2002

This review is from: Mulan: An Original Walt Disney Records Soundtrack (Audio CD)
It took me ages to get this album but when I did I was not disappointed, it truely is beautiful! From the moment Lea Salonga sings "Reflection" a lump comes to your throat. The musical directors on this film have brought out the true chinese authenticity in the music which the stringed instruments match perfectly. There are of course more up beat songs like "I'll make a man out of you" which takes you through the soldiers training. I did find though that the beginning of "mulan's decision" on the film is just before " haircut" but isn't on the CD. Apart from that if you liked the film buy the soundtrack now and you wont be disappointed by its beautiful music!!

I loooooovvvvvvveeee this album! The story is great, the songs songs are well-written, the orchestration brilliant, and Lea Salonga's voice simply mesmerizing. I hope Disney produces more albums like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, February 6, 2004
This review is from: Mulan: An Original Walt Disney Records Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This is a great soundtrack, which only recently fell into my hands. It has twelve tracks, of which four are songs taken directly from the movie! There are also six musical scores from the movie, which have excellent instrumentation, and two are pop singles - True to Your Heart by 98 Degrees and Stevie Wonder(!), and Reflection by Christina Aguilera! My kids think that this is a great CD, and we all highly recommend it to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars The music on this soundtrack is absolutely gorgeous!, July 7, 1998

I think that the Mulan soundtrack is one of Disney's best. If you loved the movie, you are sure to love the soundtrack. The songs, as usual, are wonderful. Disney sure knows how to pick the people to write the songs, and of course, who to sing them. Disney never fails to come up with wonderful, creative songs that people of all ages are sure to enjoy. My personal favorite is "I'll Make a Man Out of You," sung by Donny Osmond. He sure knows how to add life to a song. And let's not forget the beautiful voice of Lea Salonga! The scores, too, were absolutely amazing! The traditional Disney music is uniquely blended with Chinese culture. So full of life, some of these scores are sure to move you to tears. For instance, you could feel the shock and the sadness in "The Burned-Out Village." So, if you haven't seen "Mulan," it is a movie you should definitely see. And if you haven't listened to the soundtrack, you are really missing out!

This is a great accompaniment to a good movie. The tracks I like best are "Mulan Suite" and of course, "Reflection," sung perfectly by Lea Salonga.

Highly recommended!

Great story, good music, wonderful songs. Remove Aguilera's trashy version of "Reflection" and this album would be perfect!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unneeded Ranting, January 7, 2003
By
This review is from: Mulan: An Original Walt Disney Records Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I think Mulan is one of the best Disney movies of all time. I love the music and the humor. I think "Reflection" is the best song, but I think the original version is better than Christina Aguilera's version. Christina is a fairly decent artist, but I don't think she did her best on the song.
I also like "True to Your Heart". It's very catchy. "I'll Make a Man Out of You" has good vocals and is also rather humorous, considering the fact that Mulan is a girl.
Well, I have other meaningless tasks to accomplish, so I'll let you get on with your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST!!!!!!!, September 12, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Mulan: An Original Walt Disney Records Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This CD was soooooo awesome! My sister, best friend, and I had the BEST time with it. We listened to it all afternoon-this was about a month ago-and we are still obsessed with it to this day!!! Donny Oswald was wonderful job on that one song...I forget what it's called...we always just called it "Be a Man"! The scores are sooooo SWEET for a middle-schooler to do her homework. Trust me, I know from experience. :) Lea Solonga (sp?) did a totally AWESOME job on "Reflection". She fits the Mulan character perfectly. The one song that we disliked was the pop version of "Reflection". I'm not a huge fan of Christina Aguilera myself. I think that they should've included the cool-sounding "masterpiece" when she makes her decision in the movie. I am so totally obsessed with the Mulan Soundtrack and movie, I think I'd buy ANYTHING that had any connection to Mulan. Seriously.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful War Epic - Mulan, June 11, 1998
By
Raymond K. Wong (Pittsburgh, PA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Mulan: An Original Walt Disney Records Soundtrack (Audio CD)
"Mulan" is comprised of basically two parts -- the songs that are quite Disney-isque (music by Mathew Wilder, lyrics by David Zippel), and a glorious score composed by Jerry Goldsmith. First, the songs. They are quite neat once you have listened to them a few times. A mix of oriental arrangement and standard pop songs -- not as delicious as the songs from "Beauty and the Beast" or "Aladin", but certainly not too bad. "Reflection" is a nice, strong ballad, sung by the talented Lea Salonga. "I'll Make a Man Out of You" lead by Donny Osmond is quite a bouncy departure from an otherwise dark soundtrack. "A Girl Worth Fighting For", while sexist, is comical and serves the story nicely -- afterall, it happened in ancient China. And that's why "True to Your Heart" is so out of place with the rest of the soundtrack. It doesn't belong here.

Next, the score. Two words: beautiful, epic. Jerry Goldsmith has composed an Oscar worthy score, starting from "Suite from Mulan", a beautifully orchestration of Wilder's songs, including a lovely rendition of "Reflection", combined with the Mulan theme, which appears throughout the rest of the score. There are some ethnic elements in the score that add drama to the epic sound. "Mulan's Decision" and "The Huns Attack" are haunting. "Blossoms" and "The Burned-out Village" could bring tears in one's eyes.

My score: songs 3.5 stars, score 5 stars

4.0 out of 5 stars Great CD except for one thing, November 10, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Mulan: An Original Walt Disney Records Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This is a great soundtrack to accompany a very good movie. The music is great (I love the Mulan Suite in particular in the instrumental part) and Donny Osmond and Lea Salonga's voices are excellent.

I would give it five stars if not for the last track (Christina Aguilera's version of Reflection, which really annoys me). Next time, Disney should stick to REAL singers when doing another version, or better yet, stop doing these "pop" versions altogether: they just ruin the magical, animated experience. There was certainly NO NEED to match the original Reflection song with a 'bastardized' version. Disney was probably imagining Mulan taking off her clothes (ala-Christina Aguilera) as she was reflecting on the bad thing that just happened to her. (Can you imagine Mulan singing the song in the movie the way Christina did?) Thank goodness Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle did a decent job with "A Whole New World" in Aladdin!
