I must admit before this book I had no idea who Jacob Riis was. I found this book with it's stories (sometimes heartbreaking) hard to put down. In fact it was a days read off and on. Excellent stories and characters. I enjoy the fact that it is non fiction and we see how life was back then. The last chapter about the fire department heroes was intresting enough but did tend to drag on. I am hooked on this author now and I am reading what else kindle has to offer on him.

Jacob Riis was a journalist who took photos and wrote about the poverty in lower Manhattan at the beginning of the 20th Century. His writing is excellent, his characters are vivid. I was so GLAD this was available!

Very interesting...Bought this book after visiting "Lower East Side Tenement" Museum. The immigrants had a hard time living on the lower east side.

Stories a little bit old and stale, and kinda obvious.
