You Will Be Hearing About The Mulcahys,
By A Customer
This review is from: Mulcahy Family (Audio CD)
I just returned from three weeks in Ireland, about a third of which was spent at this year's Wllie Clancey Festival in Miltown-Malby in West Clare. While there I had the good fortune to see the Mulcahy Family at a private concert arranged by Mick Maloney.Let me tell you, these folks can play! It was "mighty craque" we were a' hearin'. The music is always tight and perfectly represents the bouncy Clare style. I particularly liked the way Mr. Mulkahy laid down harmonies on the box, complementing the melodies wrought on the flute, pipes, fiddle and concertina by his daughters, who are both All Ireland on multiple instruments. But the star of this show was the youngest daughter Michelle who is all of 16 years old. Her solo work on the harp is simply extraordinary, with chords which reminded one of a piano as much as a harp. Mick Maloney has expressed the view that Michelle may well become the finest traditional harpist Ireland has ever seen....high praise when one considers that they have been playing the harp in Ireland for a thousand years. While the Mulcahy's first album contains just a wee taste of Michelle's work, I highly recommended this album for it's overall quality. The disc (which I purchased on the spot in Clare) is as bright and lively as their live performance.

A must-have album for those who are serious about trad Irish music. This is simply fine playing by people who know the music, nothing slick or overproduced about this sound. This one just keeps growing on you. It's also great source material for folks who play trad Irish music. Their other album is awesome as well, check it out, too.

I'd Give It Ten Stars!,
This review is from: Mulcahy Family (Audio CD)
I have both this and the Mulcahy's second album, "Notes from the Heart" (2005 or 2006?). Irish instrumental music with lift, life, and beauty that's just breathtaking -- and sometimes heartbreaking. I never thought someone's rendition of a set of reels could make me want to cry, but some of their work is so lovely it causes pangs. Their tune selection and arrangements are terrific, and their individual solo and duet turns on flute, fiddle, concertina, harp, uilleann pipes, button box and melodeon create so much variety it's like a compilation disk. Finally, Mick Maloney has done a flawless job producing this recording, with just the right touches to enhance musicianship that's truly a national treasure.
If you're into traditional Irish music or looking for a gateway drug as you transition from the more "rockin'" Irish bands like Lunasa or Solas to more traditional music, you could do a lot worse than spend some time with the Mulcahy Family. If I could spoof Amazon's system to let me give it 10 stars, I would!
