5.0 out of 5 stars informative, easy to read, May 31, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Mule Companion: A Guide to Understanding the Mule (Paperback)
This is a good book, full of information and easy to read. A reader new to mules will find straight answers to basic questions along with background on our shared history with these animals. There is some discussion on the variety of ways the modern mule is used. There are excellent suggestions and specific points to consider when buying mules, including where to find them and how to look at the mules you find. There is information about properly fitting saddle, bridle and harness, as well as caring for the mule in general, including the potential relationships with other animals on your place. The latter part of the book deals with training, solving behavior problems, and understanding mule psychology, and some of the ways mules are different from horses to work with. These issues are covered in some detail. Although the book is not long, and the reader serious about mules will want additional resources, it is full of information in a broad range, with details and specifics to make it substantial. I like it because it satisfies my need now as a soon-to-be mule owner with horse experience, and it promises to be useful as a reference for years to come. I'm very glad to have it in my library.

My husband and I just purchased our first pair of mules. He has never ridden and I haven't ridden in 30 years and then only horses. After only having them for a few days, we both realized we were going to need some help understanding them. This book was most helpful and informative in a simple, down to earth manner. It was written in a way that the "rookie" mule owner could relate while still teaching the veteran owner.(I bought a copy for our friends from whom we had bought the mules and they loved it.) I'd definately recommend it as "required reading" for anyone contemplating teaming up with one of these wonderful animals.

I don't have any mules, but I really wish I did. I love mules, horses, and donkeys. This book had very neat facts and storys about mules and the equine family. I especially liked the story about the endurance riding. I was amazed at how strong mules are and how long they can live. The 20 Mule Team Borax story was true! The book also tells you how to care for mules and how to choose your mule. It's a great book. Definitely read it!
