Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Scientists recognize seven subspecies of Odocoileus hemionus, the most abundant deer in the American West. They are commonly known as blacktailed deer in the Northwest and Alaska, as mule deer elsewhere. They range from Baja California to Alaska, from the Pacific coast to the Great Plains. The Bauers, veteran nature photographers, have tracked these deer through every season and throughout their range. Their text covers habit, habitat, physiology and conservation. One chapter describes the devastation of Arizona's Kaibab Plateau early in this century and mistakes made in early game management. Bauer tells us where we can see mule deer in national and state parks in the West. He examines management of hunting on behalf of the deer, and is critical of federal agencies responsible for public lands and wildlife and outraged by poachers. He concludes with advice on stalking the deer with a camera. This informative text is illuminated by personal anecdotes and enhanced by stunning color photographs.

From Booklist

Mule deer are the most abundant and popular deer of the North American West. They cover a range from the Yukon Territory down through the western states to Baja, Mexico. This work, compiled by two of the world's leading wildlife photographers, is certainly one of the most complete reference sources on the mule deer. The 120 outstanding photographs in full color constitute a regular tour de force, but they are only part of this great information treasure. Conservation of the deer, seasonal behavior, physiology, and ecology are all examined. Nature photographers will appreciate a chapter that includes tips on mule deer photography. A valuable addition to wildlife and natural history collections, for the popularity of the Bauers' previous work on whitetail deer indicates this one will be in great demand. Fred Egloff

This review is from: Mule Deer (Hardcover)
The title of the book is very misleading. There is very little information about mule deer in this book. I was expecting a book with detailed information on behavior and habitat. What you get is the authors' memories of hiking through wilderness taking pictures. There is some information of Mule Deer, but nothing you cannot get from a magazine article.
