I love this thing. Yes, it's small- I would not want to fill sand bags with it. The surface of the shovel is about as big as an opened hand. For non-critical missions I would definitely pack this thing. I have used it as a kindling splitter, latrine digger, garden trowel, fire poker, ash scoop, tent stake hammer (axe has a hammer head on other end), and it keeps your hands clean and dry when making sand castles, snow-men... you name it. I keep it in my ever present bug-out bag and it is just a great little tool despite it's appearances. You can even stuff some junk in the handle for extra storage. The tools it has are a shovel(trowel), mini-axe/hammer, pick/spike which can go straight or at 90 degrees to the handle, and a funky little saw. I have not tried the saw... i'd estimate it could probably take down a 3" stump if you were determined... but the other tools are sturdy enough. It is pretty cheaply made, but the beauty of that is you can buy two instead of some other junky chinese made survival item with a fancy *cough*Gerber*cough* label. I subtracted one star because the included fabric carrying case is a marvel of bad engineering which is impossible to put the tool into unless you take everything out and carefully arrange each attachment in a puzzle-like manner. Mine already came unsewn in the axe holder spot. Who buys a tool for the carrying case anyway?

So after reading some bad reviews, I thought I would take my chances and buy this multi-tool. I took it backpacking and decided to try out the attachment for hitting in stakes. After hitting just two stakes, the attachment broke and I could not remove it since the threading was stripped (a design flaw that will happen on every device). What a waste of money and expectations. I would ship it back and get a refund, but the cost and time make that an even greater waste. What a let down...

This seems to be standard, these days.
Take a great idea, send the drawings over to China, find the lowest bidder who is able to make something 'shaped like your idea' for the lowest possible price, then produce it as cheaply as possible and bring it to market in the West with very little consideration for things like durability and quality.

This is a good concept. I do some treasure hunting in remote places and the idea of a multi-tool with these functions appeals greatly to what I do. There are times when I need a shovel, need a small hoe, need a saw, need a pick... I sure wish there was a version of this tool made in America or Germany or Britain that I could pay $99 for and have it be solid quality that I could trust. Unfortunately, we have another great idea rendered from the junk workshops of the Orient, hamstrung from the get-go by needlessly low quality.

Since there isn't a higher quality alternative to suggest, I have to grudgingly recommend this one as a 'buy' since the functions are quite handy, but to be sure, don't expect it to last very long if you use it a lot... I'll be firing up the mill and lathe and duplicating this concept with quality materials with a much more robust execution.

Boy, do I ever miss the days when things were built to last, rather than built for the widest profit margin.

This kit is pretty small. The spade is only about as big as my hand. The axe is also very roughly ground and won't chop anything. But, it fits neatly inside my back-pack and does the job (after grinding down the axe). I've actually grown to appreciate having the extra tools in a smaller kit. It is much more useful than my old combat shovel. It has definitely found a place in my camping gear.

just got it and unboxed it. none of the parts fit correctly, and the metal pin is just there to make sure the parts dont go flying. the shovel flops around, the axe and saw tool are warped to where i cant even get the pin in, and the pick axe is in the same condition as the shovel. the axe isnt sharpened at all, the saw might as well go to a childs toy, and the pin doesnt have one of those metal snap balls, its got some kind of metal paper clip thing to keep it in place. buy one of these at a camping store so you know what youre looking at.

Got this to keep in my Jeep as a just in case tool. Got what I paid for, a cheap aweful tool that wouldn't do anything more than plant bulbs in your garden; maybe ( and I stress maybe) saw through a stick of butter; and crack an ice cube.... If your looking for something worthwhile avoid this. Spend the extra cash and dont waste your time...

I received this item and once opened I could do nothing but laugh. This is a mere kids toy with no practical use. Not one piece had an edge to it do be useful. I ran my finger down every surface without the slightest hint of a paper cut. I hope you are ready to break out a file and spend hours putting an edge to the saw and a few more on a honing stone for the axe, pick, and shovel. I guess a useful all in one design was too good to be true. I hope this helps anyone else even slightly thinking about this product.

Disappointed with the quality and size of this product.Shovel is small. Edges are thick and dull.
I should have spent more time reading spec's instead of looking at the pictures.
