5.0 out of 5 stars An area uniquely explored with insight and understanding, January 29, 2000

This review is from: Multicultural Communication and Popular Culture: Racial and Ethnic Images in Star Trek (Paperback)
It has been my pleasure to read Dr. Byrd's astute interpretation of a television program that helped in shaping my perception of the perfect future. Through Byrd's character analysis to her keen sense of imagery the reader is comfortably conveyed to the conclusion. This is the stuff of a truly satisfying read. A great author explores a wonderful area of our culture. This book is extraordinarily well researched and ensures the reader new thoughts and perspectives on a beloved area of American Culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than just another Trek book, January 6, 2000

This review is from: Multicultural Communication and Popular Culture: Racial and Ethnic Images in Star Trek (Paperback)
I began reading this book with the notion that it was just another in the long line of recent scholarly books on Star Trek. I was in for a surprise. The book was so much more. It is well written and provides an excellent framework from which to analyze Star Trek. The book has full literature reviews on the stereotypes of Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, and Native Americans reaching back as far as the late 1800's in dime store novels.Byrd brings those reviews right up to the present. After reading the book I was much more informed about not only Star Trek, but I became a better critical viewer of TV and movies.

The book is an excellent text on popular culture and media criticism. A must for every serious Trekker.
