From the Inside Flap

We are witnessing an explosive growth in use of multiple media forms (voice, data, images and video etc.) in varied application areas including entertainment, communication, collaborative work, electronic commerce and university courses. The increasing computing power, integrated with multimedia and telecommunication technologies, is bringing into reality our dream of real time, virtually face-to-face interaction with collaborators sitting far away from us. In the process of realizing our technological ambitions, we need to address a number of technology, management and design issues. We need to be familiar with exciting current applications. It is impossible to track the magnitude and breadth of changes that the multimedia and communication technology is bringing daily to us in many different ways throughout the world. Consequently this book presents an overview of the expanding technology beginning with application techniques that lead to management and design issues. Our goal is to highlight major multimedia networking issues, understanding and solution approaches, and networked multimedia applications design. Because we wanted to include diverse ideas from various locations, chapters from professionals and researchers from about thirteen countries working in the forefront of this technology are included. This book has nineteen chapters, which include the following major multimedia networking areas.

• Development and management of real time distributed multimedia applications • Audio/video applications and streaming issues • Protocols and technologies for building Internet multimedia applications • QOS frameworks and implementation • Collaborative applications • Multimedia synchronization in distributed environment • Multicasting technology and applications • Use of mobile multimedia over wireless network.

The chapters in this book address the dynamic and efficient usage of the resources, which are the fundamental aspects of multimedia networks and applications. This book also details some current research, applications and future research directions. The following paragraphs are intended to put together the abstracts from each chapter in a manner to provide an overview of the topics covered. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Broad panorama of multimedia networking, August 13, 2002
This book contains a collection of 19 contributions of different experts in multimedia networking covering a very large field of technologies and applications.

It covers technologies from signal processing (audio, video, 3D-scenes) networking (CORBA, multimedia webcast, communications, wireless 3G networks, Internet protocols, traffic shaping, QoS) and systems (databases, admission control).

Addressed applications include collaborative environments, videoconferencing, medical teleconsultation, video broadcast, multimedia web retrieval, scheduling, jitterless audio transmission, lip reading and wireless multimedia.

The contrubutions in this book give two type of information: First, basic technologies of multimedia networking are introduced and reviewed in tutorial sections. Second, the variety of applications and contexts give an insight how basic technologies are put into practice, combined together and
optimized for a given problem.

This book enrichs people at begin of technical carreer by showing how scholar knowledge is related to real applications. The book supports multimedia networking specialists in enlarging their horizon to get a more complete view of their field of work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Multimedia Networking and Applications, August 5, 2002
By
Mark T. Maybury (Chelmsford, MA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Multimedia Networking: Technology, Management and Applications (Digital)
Multimedia, the synergistic use of text, audio, and video in a variety of interactive devices, promises to enable new ways to learn, work, govern, and play. Just what combinations and/or applications of media will work effectively and/or efficiently remains to be discovered. This nineteen chapter collection draws upon a diverse set of international contributors from thirteen countries working in the forefront of this technology. This chapters in this book address many dimensions of multimedia networking and begin to illuminate many of the underexplored multimedia opportunities. Multimedia Networking: Technology, Management and Applications addresses a broad range of topics ranging from technical issues such as multimedia protocols and synchronization in distributed environments to the high level applications that multimedia infrastructures and networks will enable such as multimedia collaboration and mobile multimedia communication and computation over wireless networks. This book can be valuable to students, researchers, and professionals learning about, working in, or researching multimedia networking.

Depending upon the reader's background and/or objectives, the book offers a very broad introduction to the topic. If the reader is a network engineer, they will find most chapters that address issues of quality of service, multicasting for efficient bandwidth utilization, and mobile multimedia over wireless network. On the other hand, if the reader is an application developer, they will find reports on Internet multimedia applications, multimedia collaboration, and electronic commerce. The interdependencies between the higher level multimedia applications and underlying networking infrastructure is made explicit by having these diverse perspectives appear within a single collection. Accordingly, this text will find readership in academic, industrial and government settings for a number of purposes including education, research, and innovation.
