Multimedia Networking and Applications,
By Mark T. Maybury (Chelmsford, MA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Multimedia Networking: Technology, Management and Applications (Digital)
Multimedia, the synergistic use of text, audio, and video in a variety of interactive devices, promises to enable new ways to learn, work, govern, and play. Just what combinations and/or applications of media will work effectively and/or efficiently remains to be discovered. This nineteen chapter collection draws upon a diverse set of international contributors from thirteen countries working in the forefront of this technology. This chapters in this book address many dimensions of multimedia networking and begin to illuminate many of the underexplored multimedia opportunities. Multimedia Networking: Technology, Management and Applications addresses a broad range of topics ranging from technical issues such as multimedia protocols and synchronization in distributed environments to the high level applications that multimedia infrastructures and networks will enable such as multimedia collaboration and mobile multimedia communication and computation over wireless networks. This book can be valuable to students, researchers, and professionals learning about, working in, or researching multimedia networking. Depending upon the reader's background and/or objectives, the book offers a very broad introduction to the topic. If the reader is a network engineer, they will find most chapters that address issues of quality of service, multicasting for efficient bandwidth utilization, and mobile multimedia over wireless network. On the other hand, if the reader is an application developer, they will find reports on Internet multimedia applications, multimedia collaboration, and electronic commerce. The interdependencies between the higher level multimedia applications and underlying networking infrastructure is made explicit by having these diverse perspectives appear within a single collection. Accordingly, this text will find readership in academic, industrial and government settings for a number of purposes including education, research, and innovation. |
