Book Description

September 6, 2001 0340662921 978-0340662922
Multimodal Discourse outlines a new theory of communication for the age of interactive multimedia. Kress and Van Leeuwen show how two kinds of thought processes interact in the design and production of communicative messages: "design thinking" and "production thinking," the kind of thinking which occurs in direct interaction with the materials and media used. This book will be a key text in courses of language, media and communication willing to take on the theoretical challenges posed by multimodality, mulitmedia and multi-skilling, and it provides inspiring theoretical input for courses in interactive multimedia design.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Multimodal Discourse is the theoretical browser we need to navigate the exuberant multimodality of the highly mediated world in which we live. For students and specialists in communication or semiotics, cultural studies or linguistics, graphic design or anthropology this is the foundational theory of how meaning is made in this period of increasing semiotic fragmentation and cross-over."--Ron Scollon, Professor of Linguistics, Georgetown University

This review is from: Multimodal Discourse (Paperback)
This book sets out some good ideas for helping to consider the ways that we 'mean' things beyond just what type into the Amazon review text box. The authors would say that my use of a keyboard affects the meaning, as does your use of a computer monitor to read the review. Their expansive definition of "modes" is very helpful; however, the trend of their writing is to lock the meanings of their terms down as tightly---read 'as scientifically'---as possible. It's a mild hypocrisy, I guess. But this text has a pretty prominent place for now, so you have to just deal with it (as well as the sometimes hyperintellectual jargon and syntax).
