Book Description

May 15, 2000
This is the definitive guide for everyone concerned with multiple sclerosis those who have MS, those who share their lives with someone who has MS, and all health care professionals involved with its management. It covers a wide range of topics in a format that is familiar, accessible, and easily understood. Its question and answer format reflects the collaborative relationship between people with MS and their health care professionals. The authors of each chapter answer the questions that they have been asked repeatedly in the course of their work with MS. The questions provide a model and a vocabulary for those who are not certain what questions to ask or how to ask them, and makes it possible for readers to easily find information about specific topics and questions based on their individual needs. The book was developed under the auspices of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers, and the contributors are leading authorities in all areas of multiple sclerosis management. The questions relevant to each topic were assembled from a variety of sources, including the computerized index of all questions telephoned into the National MS Society, the questions most frequently asked of the health care professionals participating in the preparation of the book, and questions suggested by a task force of patients and family members. Each chapter contains a list of references and recommended reading for readers interested in pursuing more detailed information on a particular topic. The guide also contains a comprehensive glossary of all terms commonly used in MS management, as well as a list of relevant resources for individuals with MS and their families. The chapter on treatments includes descriptions of each of the medications commonly used in the treatment of MS and the management of its symptoms.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This book, developed under the auspices of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers and made possible by an educational grant to the consortium by Bertex Laboratories, the manufacturer of Betaseron, the first drug approved by the FDA for treatment of multiple sclerosis, represents an interdisciplinary approach to the disease. Its goal is to help those with MS and their families formulate questions to ask their healthcare providers so they can manage life with MS. Written by experts, chapters cover topics ranging from neurology and treatment to emotional, sexual, and employment issues. Introductory material is followed by a series of questions most often asked of the authors in their work with MS, as well as questions received by the Information Center at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Chapters conclude with a list of recommended readings and other available resources. Appendixes include information sheets about drugs commonly used to treat and manage MS, as well as a comprehensive glossary of terms. This work is more inclusive and comprehensive than most single-authored, consumer-oriented publications, and the authors recommend it not necessarily be read cover to cover but treated as a reference source to be referred to according to individual need. Recommended to supplement other, more traditional sources such as Louis Rosner Jr. and Shelley Ross's Multiple Sclerosis (S. & S., 1992) in consumer health collections.?Sue Hollander, Univ. of Illinois Lib. of the Health Sciences at Rockford

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, very informative question and answer format., June 20, 1999
By A Customer
I have had M.S. for about two years. I waslooking for a book to answer specific questions I had. This book did a great job. The format of the book is arranged in the question and answer style. You can look up a question in the index, go to the page identified and get the information without reading the entire book. This is a great advantage in gaining information on specific problems associated with a very complicated disease.

3.0 out of 5 stars Outdated Information, June 6, 2000
By A Customer
While this book was very informative, it had very outdated information. A separate booklet was sent with this book, to update some of the information, but even this was outdated material. I don't think enough information was given about the various tests that you have to go through, to be diagnosed. Telling a person more about what to expect during these tests, helps to alleviate the patients fears.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is THE book you will ever need, April 21, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Multiple Sclerosis: The Questions You Have - The Answers You Need (Paperback)
Awesome coverage of all the areas from the basics, to employment and insurance issues, to latest research to many other things.

I bought 2 other books along with this. But after reaing this one, I returned the other two books and it made them redundant.

If you need to buy just one book (even if you have the money to buy 10 books on MS), this is the ONLY book you will ever need.
