Multiple-Target Tracking by Sam Blackman is required reading for anyone seriously interested in the problem of target tracking. It covers a broad range of topics ranging from simple fixed coefficent trackers to sophisticated multiple hypothesis trackers. The reader is led through a series of discussions that provide a solid foundation for understanding and implementing solutions to the tracking problem. A particular strong point of the book is the numerous worked examples that demonstrate solutions to most of the key problems encountered when designing a tracking system. Although somewhat dated now, it still stands as the best overall reference for tracking practitioners.

I purchased this years ago while working at a company that designed and built systems for civil air traffic control (ATC) and air traffic management (ATM). In that context, I found this book to be very helpful in understanding the underlying principles behind multi-target trackers.

Another reviewer indicated that the material is a bit dated. I would agree with that, but I would add that much of the new research (seen in IEEE Target Tracking papers and such) still requires a knowledge of the material from this book as a prerequisite. Also, the amount of material covered is fairly comprehensive. Among the subjects covered are multi-target tracking, track association (and association algorithms like global nearest-neighbor and JPDA), as well as other related topics.

Overall, I would recommend this for anyone looking for a good introduction to multiple-target tracking.
