Book Description

October 12, 2004 012385251X 978-0123852519 1
Modern system-on-chip (SoC) design shows a clear trend toward integration of multiple processor cores on a single chip. Designing a multiprocessor system-on-chip (MPSOC) requires an understanding of the various design styles and techniques used in the multiprocessor. Understanding the application area of the MPSOC is also critical to making proper tradeoffs and design decisions.

Multiprocessor Systems-on-Chips covers both design techniques and applications for MPSOCs. Design topics include multiprocessor architectures, processors, operating systems, compilers, methodologies, and synthesis algorithms, and application areas covered include telecommunications and multimedia. The majority of the chapters were collected from presentations made at the International Workshop on Application-Specific Multi-Processor SoC held over the past two years. The workshop assembled internationally recognized speakers on the range of topics relevant to MPSOCs. After having refined their material at the workshop, the speakers are now writing chapters and the editors are fashioning them into a unified book by making connections between chapters and developing common terminology.

*Examines several different architectures and the constraints imposed on them
*Discusses scheduling, real-time operating systems, and compilers
*Analyzes design trade-off and decisions in telecommunications and multimedia applications

Book Description

The first book to survey this emerging field.

From the Back Cover

"Wolf and Jerraya have struck a delicate balance in the presentation of a specialized body of knowledge that is highly detailed and topic-specific, yet sufficiently wide-ranging to reflect the overall concept of an MPSOC as the next logical step in integrated complex system design. The text provides an eminently accessible and practical view of the issues associated with this emerging and important area of endeavor."
-Daniel Phillips, Rochester Institute of Technology

Modern system-on-chip (SoC) design shows a clear trend toward integration of multiple processor cores on a single chip. Designing a multiprocessor system-on-chip (MPSOC) requires an understanding of the various design styles and techniques used in the multiprocessor. Understanding the application area of the MPSOC is also critical to making proper tradeoffs and design decisions.

Editors Wayne Wolf and Ahmed Jerraya have selected a group of internationally recognized experts to address these needs and other critical challenges faced by the MPSOC designer. They focus on multiprocessor architectures, processors, operating systems, compilers, methodologies, and synthesis algorithms, and examine telecommunications and multimedia applications to consider design tradeoffs and design decisions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Trends in Chip Multiprocessor Design, April 30, 2008

This review is from: Multiprocessor Systems-on-Chips (Systems on Silicon) (Hardcover)
The Multiprocessor Systems-on-Chips book is a good collection of articles from academia and industry that presents the challenges, research, and innovations in multiprocessor systems-on-chip (MPSoC) designs. The book was published in 2005, so the articles in it are a few years old. But, the information is still relevant and they provide many references to other literature about the subject. In the dynamic field of MPSoC design, the book serves as a good reference to see what advances have transpired and where the trends will lead.

This was a required textbook for a graduate course I took in SoC design. Selected chapters from the book were assigned for reading and class discussion. Knowledge of computer engineering is essential to understanding the book contents.
