Editorial Reviews

From the Artist

Russell and I would like to say a very warm hello to all our many Amazon fans. Finally our new cd, Mumbo Jumbo is here and available today. The new cd is a concept album about life in the world today. Reality and non reality, everything and nothing, through the eyes of someone not used to a busy and hectic world like ours. Are the things we believe in the real thing or a just a reflection, do we follow the Jumbo instead of the Mumbo? Of course it is also a love story, but a different perspective on love! We really believe it is the best album we have ever made and we are sure you will think so too so have a listen.

About the Artist

Graham Russell & Russell Hitchcock met on May 12, 1975, the first day of rehearsals for "Jesus Christ Superstar" in Sydney, Australia; they became instant friends with their common love for The Beatles and, of course, singing.

After the shows' performances at 10:30, they would play pizza parlors, coffee bars and night clubs with just one guitar and two voices. They quickly gained a reputation for great harmonies and for original songs that Graham was constantly writing. They made a demo on a cassette of two songs, "Love and Other Bruises" and "If You Knew Me" and took it to every record company in Sydney. Everyone turned it down but one -- CBS Records -- who admired their unique style. They made a single in one afternoon and it shot to number one on the national charts. Air Supply was born! That same year, they opened for Rod Stewart across Australia and then throughout the U.S. and Canada playing all of the famous huge venues before Rod would take the stage. They found new fans, but did not break the U.S. market.

Back in Australia they had to start again and made a record called "Life Support". On this record were some treasures of songs, including "Lost in Love" which went top 10 in Australia and somehow found its way to music industry executive Clive Davis in New York.

Clive immediately signed Air Supply to Arista Records and in 1980, "Lost in Love" became the fastest selling single in the world, leaping to the top of all of the charts. Now Air Supply were on their way. The second single was "All Out of Love," and that went up the charts even quicker. Seven top-five singles later, Air Supply at that time had equaled The Beatles' run of consecutive top five singles. The albums "Lost in Love", "The One That You Love", "Now & Forever", and "The Greatest Hits" sold in excess of 20 million copies. "Lost in Love" was named Song of the Year in 1980, and, with the other singles, sold over 10 million copies.

The trademark sound of Russell Hitchcock's soaring tenor voice and Graham Russell's simple yet majestic songs created a unique sound that would forever be known as Air Supply.

However, it is the live shows that always hold audiences captive around the world. They were the first Western group to tour China, Taiwan, and countless other countries that before would not allow pop music across their borders. In 1983 they recorded "Making Love Out of Nothing at All" by Jim Steinman which solidified the group as a permanent force in modern music. This song was released on "The Greatest Hits" album which soared past 7 million copies.

"Lost in Love", "All Out of Love", "The One That You Love", "Sweet Dreams", and "Making Love Out of Nothing at All" have each achieved multi-million plays on the radio.

In 1986 the group's music was still playing endlessly on radio. That same year, Graham was married to actress Jodi Varble from Rochelle, Illinois, who also was his leading lady in the video for "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All."

Air Supply began to tour with lavish productions in places that no one had been before. In South America and Asia they became a part of everyone's life. In 1988, Air Supply was asked to participate in Australia's bicentennial celebration and to play for HRH Prince Charles and HRH Princess Diana, where they learned both were already ardent fans. This engagement would be one of their most treasured moments in their career.

In 1989, they recorded "The Earth Is" album selling over a million copies outside of the U.S. This album was followed by "The Vanishing Race" CD and, with the singles "Goodbye" and "It's Never Too Late", again saw multi-platinum success. The following albums, "News from Nowhere", "Yours Truly", and "Across the Concrete Sky" all gave their second greatest hits album multi-platinum status as they traveled the world each and every year.

In 2000, a new production company was founded to be devoted to Air Supply's entire future product, called A Nice Pear, which gave them complete creative control.

In July 2005, their live DVD, "It Was 30 Years Ago Today" celebrated 30 years of success around the world and in that same month, Air Supply smashed attendance records when, in Cuba, at one show they played to 175,000 people. Also 2005 saw the release of "The Singer and the Song", an acoustic album of many of their big hits which received critical acclaim.

Now in 2010, the world is waiting for the brand new studio CD, "Mumbo Jumbo". This 14-track concept CD will be release on the Oddson Records label. Complete with a concept short story, "Mumbo Jumbo" will be a unique release.

One of the best things about this album is the great variety of songs. You get classic ballads like Hold On (totally sounds like a hit single to me !) and Until. Then you have perfectly crafted upbeat pop songs like the first single Dance with Me as well as A Little Bit of Everything and Faith in Love. Then you have a couple of rockin' songs like Me Like You and the title track. All this plus a mixture of a little jazz and R&B vibe. The thing is, none of it feels forced---as if they are purposefully trying to go in different styles---it all flows very naturally and just proves how versatile Air Supply can be. Diehard Airheads have always known that this band is more than just a ballad band---we see it in concert all the time. But this is the first album to really demonstrate this so thoroughly. I think Air Supply fans will love this album but at the same time---people who normally don't cut Air Supply any slack should easily find something to like on here too. Great job and well worth the wait. I am glad they are with Odds on Records as hopefully having a label behind them that really cares about marketing will help this release along. Already Dance with Me is about to crack the top 20 on the AC radioplay charts. Well deserved. Everyone should give this album a listen. And I must also comment that Russell Hitchcock's incredible voice is in such fine form here. His voice is more powerful here than it has been on the last couple of studio albums. The man is going to be 61 soon and he sounds amazing !

Besides not being to come up with a title for this CD, they also couldn't come up with very good songs either! I guess there's comes a point where an artist or band should just stop making new music! They've come a long way since the 1993 unexpected masterpiece "The Vanishing Race". Even the 93 album New From Nowhere, or Book Of Love from 95 sound far superior to this release! Their voices are losing a LOT of range now too, they are missing the notes! I noticed this live as well, I've seen them 6 times and it keeps getting worse! Hold On is a decent song though, but they miss some of the highs. A Little Bit More is a pretty good song for Graham. Why and Faith In Love are also pretty good ballads! Until is a really slow one, but man I can't believe how bad Russell's voice has become, he's so off on his key. Anyway besides from those few songs I mentioned, this is a very forgettable CD. And I just have to say the dozen or so users who have praised this CD and some even saying it's one of their very best; YOU'RE STANDARDS AREN'T VERY HIGH FOR AN AIR SUPPLY ALBUM! Go back and listen to Vanishing Race if you want to hear some of their previous greatness or even earlier on in the 70's and 80's!

Quite often artists are quoted as saying that their lastest release is their best work ever and Air Supply is no exception. The difference is that this time it may very well be correct! Mumbo Jumbo is a concept album that is a little complicated, but it works. The music definitely supports the entire conceptual story; however, most of the songs can stand alone without an explanation.

The thing that makes this Air Supply release so good is the upbeat nature of the majority of the songs. Of course, there are some great classic Air Supply ballads on this CD; "Hold On", "Why" and "Until". There are several great upbeat songs that are simply fun to listen to repeatedly; "Dance with Me", "A Little Bit of Everything", "Alternate Ending", "Mumbo Jumbo", and "Faith in Love". There is one rocker on this CD which is "Me Like You" and it is awesome!

Hail to Air Supply and Odds On Records for this release. It would be great if Odds On released "Me Like You" as a single. It would be a bold statement that Air Supply can rock as hard as the next band and isn't just an old softy. Of course, any Airhead could already tell you that.

Caution to anyone who buys this CD, it is very addicting!!

I love this cd. Highesty kudos to this highly talented group on this welcomed release of all brand new material. Air Supply was huge in the 80s and had a certain formula of heavily orchestrated sweet pop ballads. Many critics considered these attempts pure bubble gum but no one could resist the charm and pure romanticism in their music. They have tried a few other cds of new material over the years to not much success. But here they give us a cd of songs that show a whole other side to Air Supply. Of course these are love songs and filled with emotion but this set MUMBO JUMBO rivals their best work and reaches a level much more inventive and original than anything they have ever done before.

From the opening note of the electronic, slightly mystical SETTING THE SEEN the listener knows this is a different Air Supply. The song proves to be lovely and heartfelt - a perfect intro to this magical set. Next is my favorite DANCE WITH ME which has words and lyrics that could have been with a song by Air Supply recorded in their prime but it with this song that we see how different things really are. The over orchestrated styly is gone. Instead the music is with a pop rock band on all songs and extremes are gone. Instead we get pure quality music. In the past Russell Hitchcock ruled most of the vocals while here they are shared 50/50 with partner Graham Russell with both taking solos and most often singing together with perfect harmonies.

There are no misses here. The ballads HOLD ON, A LITTLE BIT MORE, WHY and CAN I BE YOUR LOVER all have their own identity and are beautiful expressions of sincere passion and feeling. ALTERNATE ENDING and ME LIKE YOU are adventurous pop rock songs different from anything they have done before.
