Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book is a rich source for information on ancient diseases...Mummies Disease and Ancient Cultures achieves a good balance of detail with general facts, and it is well written, well illustrated, and well priced." Keith Dobney, Discovering Archaeology

"...this is impresively solid science and scholarship. The bibliographies are complete...This volume is very highly recommended indeed!" Bulletin of the History of Medicine

"The second edition of Mummies, Disease, and Ancient Cultures remains, just as with the first, a valuable resource to the professional and novice interested in mummy studies...Overall the edition is a success. It could be used for an introductory course on mummification practices or merely as a resource. It is not guaged to the novice, but the beginner and the professional should welcome it to their collection as a helpful nd highly informative edition to their library." SAS Bulletin

Book Description

To look upon a mummy is to come face to face with our past. Mummies have been found on every continent, some deliberately preserved as in ancient Egypt, others accidentally by baking heat, intense cold, or tanning in peat bogs. By examining these preserved humans, we can get profound insights into the lives, health and cultures of individuals and populations long gone. This new edition is a fascinating account of mummification for all those interested in paleopathology, anthropology, archaeology and the history of medicine.

I absolutely loved this book! The topic of mummies brings to mind Boris Karloff and the horror flicks. This book makes these amasing finds real...and HUMAN! I found the scholarship to be seemingly complete and accurate and even as a Lay-Person, I could understand what great amounts of information humankind was gleening from the mummies. In fact, I enjoyed reading this 2nd edition so much, I obtainined the 1st edition to have a look at "The Classic" work itself. A truly great adventure.

This is not a lightweight book on the subject. It partakes more of a medical examiner's report and requires a certain degree of training in anatomy-physiology and its terminology to really get much out of it. If the reader has some health care training--or patience and a medical dictionary--they should find most of the information accessible.

The book is edited by Cockburn, Cockburn, and Reyman and is an updated version of a book first published in 1980 by the first two named editors. Many of the individual discussions, such as those on PUM II and ROM I, on the Japanese mummies, etc, were discussed in that volume, and some of the work is therefore a little dated (~1970s). Individual entries in the book are written by the experts who examined the physical remains and are experts in pathology, histology, dentistry, radiology, and other science fields. In short, this is not a book on history or culture.

The practice of intentional mummification is explained and demonstrated by examples, primarily ancient Egyptian, although examples from China, Japan, the Canary Islands and other countries less commonly associated with the practice are also included, making it apparent that the habit of intentional preservation of human remains is very wide spread. Differences in technique and in the external treatment of bodies are discussed, and in some instances the authors attempt to interpret the significance of the practice to the culture in which it is found. Although mummification is generally regarded as a "whole body" invention, the authors also present different types, most notably the Brazilian head hunter's trophies and also the Chinchorro mummies

This book is an excellent and multi-faceted exploration into the world of mummies and paleopathology. It is not a light read (if you're looking for that, try "The Mummy Congress" by Heather Pringle, which is a great intro) but it is thorough and absolutely fascinating. If you're not familiar with medical terms then you might want to look a few terms up as you read. Awesome book, highly recommended.

This book was used as a text in a college course on Mummies. The amount of information is not daunting, but it is complete. Very interesting, and the author's are recognized authorities on the subject. Its a good read, especially if you want to separate the fact from fiction when learning about mummies.
