Grade 4-6 Although there are many books for children about ancient Egypt and mummies, only Pace's Wrapped for Eternity (McGraw, 1974; o.p.) is as thorough as Mummies, Tombs, and Treasure. Perl traces the history of the Egyptian cult of the dead from the first accidental mummifications to the elaborate and costly rituals practiced during the great reigns of Egypt. Readers learn how mummies were prepared and the rituals of mummification. Here too is information on what happened to the mummies after the fall of the Egyptian empire (many were ground into powder for use as a medieval medicine). Besides information about mummies, Perl gives a detailed account of ancient Egyptian history and religion, which makes this book an excellent resource for school reports on ancient Egypt. Although many of the black-and-white photos have been used before (see McHargue's Mummies Lippincott, 1972; o.p.), they do elucidate the text. And while much of this information can also be found in other sources, many of them do not wrap up the subject nearly so well as this well-written and comprehensive book. Cathryn A. More About the Author

Lila Perl was born in Brooklyn and read voraciously as a child, but never dreamed that she would become the author of more than 60 books published by mainstream publishers including Dutton, Houghton Mifflin, HarperCollins, and Scholastic. Her subjects for adults, young adults, and children range from mummies, ancient Egyptians, and the ancient Maya, to the Holocaust, genocide, cloning, and world terrorism; from the foods and everyday lives of colonial and pioneer Americans to personal ancestor-hunting.

Lila Perl was listed in 2001 among "The Pride of Brooklyn College" by her alma mater, and has received a "Best Books for the Teenage" award from the New York Public Library. Her book on junk food, fast food, and health food won a Boston Globe Award. Her Holocaust story, Four Perfect Pebbles, was a recipient of the Sidney Taylor Award.

In June, 2011, Lila Perl published her first Ebook, What I Did Last Summer, a story about the magic of a first love at a rustic summer camp far from parental restrictions and shadowed by a looming war. Fifteen-year-old Bryna tells her story as she teeters between innocence and young womanhood, a story that is funny,tender,and wistful.

I bought "Mummies, Tombs, and Treasure: Secrets of Ancient Egypt" for my adolescent cousins a few years back. This is really the stuff dreams are made of when you are at that age. This is actually quite an intriguing book that captivates the reader immediately. I recommended this book to a friend of mine whose has a boy very interested in archeology. That is why this book immediately came to mind. As I recall the cover grabbed me right away but the text itself is very well written. It definitely ignites the imagination and is fuel to the minds of many a young archeologist in the making.
