But will her mummy forgive her? :),
By
This review is from: Mummy (Mass Market Paperback)
There's a big difference between romantic fantasies of being a thief and the reality of actually doing it. Emlyn has always dreamed of committing the perfect crime. Four classmates want to steal the mummy from the local museum and hang it from the school's bell tower as a Senior Prank. They think Emlyn can be a big help. Emlyn "cases the joint." The theft is possible. In fact, she's already acquired a copy of the museum's master key! Faced with her big chance, Emlyn has second thoughts but despite her conscience, she finds herself standing in the museum with mummy in hand. Then her real problems begin. "Mummy" is typical of Caroline B. Cooney's writing. She starts off with a normal person or group and each act follow plausably from those preceeding. Yet somehow the characters find themselves in some exciting, dramatic dilemma. There are often a few curves along the way as well. In this novel, getting out of trouble is not as simple as returning a stolen mummy, though not for the reasons you might expect. The author explores the characters' thoughts and feelings while still keeping the plot moving at a satisfying pace. I find myself identifying with the main character so thoroughly while reading, that it takes a few moments for me to be able to return to my own reality when I quit. Days later, I find myself still thinking about the issues raised. I'm sure I'll never again see a mummy in a museum without thinking of Emlyn and her adventures. Enjoy!

Caroline B. Cooney's Mummy is a story about a sly girl who can get away with any security when it comes to stealing. One fateful night, Emlyn went into the museum to steal a beautiful Egyptian mummy. On that fateful night, everything becomes a failure. Caroline B. Cooney's Mummy is a vivid book, filled with excitement and adventure, it keeps you reading the book until you turn to the last page of Mummy.

Not Cooney's best,
This review is from: Mummy (Mass Market Paperback)
Emlyn is a good girl. At least that's what everybody thinks until she steals a 3,000 year old Egyptian mummy from a museum for a high-school prank. But when the other members of her "team" forget about the prank part, she begins to wish it never happened.
After reading other titles from the author, such as "Wanted" and "Losing Christina", I was disappointed with this book. This is not Caroline B. Cooney at her best. The plot is not that great, and the ending was a big let down. Also, there are many typos and editorial mistakes that I was surprised to see from a big company like Scholastic. If you are going to read Cooney, try "Wanted", but I would not recommend this one.

Tips on breaking in,

This review is from: Mummy (Mass Market Paperback)
I thought this was an extremely well written book. Ms. Cooney's books are my favorite, and "The Mummy", a more recent book of hers, shows a great deal of detail. Thus, it makes the book more suspensful. Now, a lot of people don't like this book, and I must admit, it is a little boring at the beginning. But it's so good. You get an awesome picture in your mind from all the details and it is just exceptional work for Caroline B. Cooney.

To Steal or Not to Steal,
By A Customer
This review is from: Mummy (Mass Market Paperback)
If you love suspense and suprises, this book is for you. The title of this book is Mummy. The author is Caroline B. Cooney. The main character is Emlyn. This book is about Emlyn, who is dared to pull off a prank on Mischeif Night. Finally, it's her chance to do what she wants. Then, everything falls apart. I think this book should be recommended for a book to read over the summer for grades 6,7,and 8. I really got into this book. I was wondering what she would do each chapter and focusing on what the character is going through. I give this book 4 stars because every chapter is full of life and suspense. My favorite part was when Emlyn was trying to steal the mummy of Amarel-Re. She succesively sneaks past cameras, security guards, and her parents to make the steal possible. My favorite character was Emlyn because she has been wanting to do something bad for a long time and finally considers it. She is smart and is having second thoughts. She may be sly, but she is smart.

The Mummy is a good book especially if you like suspense and surprises. It's about a girl named Emlyn who gets challenged by her friends to steal a mummy for a prank but then when she tries everything goes wrong. This book has a lot of good parts first o f all you never know what's going to happen next because it takes a lot of unexpected turns. The second reason is because is it has a lot of suspense which I think is partly because of all the unexpected turns since your always wondering what's going to come up next. If you like suspense and surprises Then this book should definitely be on your list to read.

Caroline Cooney has managed to weave a fascinating tale of suspense in her outstanding book, Mummy. A beautiful Egyptian mummy has disappeared from the museum. No one suspects that Emlyn, the girl who never gets in trouble, is the thief. Emlyn is a good girl with a bad streak. She yearns to be a brilliant thief and commit the perfect crime. She keeps a library in her head of "wrong things to do, and how to do them." She makes mental notes of places to stash loot, of situations crying out for blackmail, or trust where there should be locks. When her friends suggest stealing the Egyptian mummy from the museum and hoisting it up to the old high school's bell tower, Emlyn is ready. A crime such as this is what she's been waiting for all of her life. As Jack says, "Our senior class has to pull off a really exceptional trick for Mischief Night." However, the director of the museum, Dr. Harris Brisband, is accused of the theft. Moreover, it turns out that greed is motivating her friends as much as the people on the museum board. Emlyn loves and respects the mummy, Princess Amaral-Re. She cannot bear to see it sawed up and the gold adorning its body taken. Will Emlyn do the right thing? What exactly is the right thing to do? Emlyn thinks of a creative and unusual solution to her problem of what to do with the mummy and hopes it will work.

Bad Lurks Below Good,
By
This review is from: Mummy (Mass Market Paperback)
Emlyn is the perfect child. She is a high school student who gets good grades, participates in sports and music, and never causes her parents any trouble. That's the job of her two younger brothers. Emlyn is the good one in the family. But secretly, she dreams of doing something bad. She plots and plans, thinks up ways to rob banks, smuggle things into airports, and a thousand other crimes. She's just never followed through with her plans.
Sometime close to Halloween, four of her classmates approach her. It is a tradition for seniors at her high school to pull a prank, which usually involves suspending something from the bell tower of the school. They want to steal the Egyptian mummy from the nearby museum and suspend that. They think Emlyn will be the perfect cover, and although she doesn't trust the other students, she gets involved. After stealing the mummy, Emlyn starts to get nervous. She worries about somehow harming such a valuable piece of historical treasure. Then things get much worse when television news stations begin speculating on the jewels the mummy is probably wearing underneath all of the wrappings. Emlyn feels responsible for keeping this mummy in good condition. But can she stop what she's started? I liked that Emlyn was an interesting and complex character, the girl who was really good at pretending to be good while inside she had all of these dreams of doing something bad. I also liked how Emlyn didn't give into her peers--she looked for a solution to her problem and then worked toward it instead of just giving up. I would have liked to have seen more of Emlyn's parents. They were completely absent from the story, and I wondered about them.

Not Cooney's Best...,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Mummy (Mass Market Paperback)
This is not Cooney's best, but it really freaked me out! I was so caught up in it, I couldn't put in down. I was reading it by a feeble booklight at 10:00 at night. I almost skipped pages because I was in such a hurry to finish it. I really felt the emotions in the book, and that's one reason I was so glued to it.
