5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than the first!
This is my 5th J.R. Rain book in 6 days and I don't even know the guy. He has made my vacation week. I have some how saved the best for last. Read the first Jim Knighthorse first to capture the full flavor of the characters. This is a well written, humorous, and interesting story; Not too serious or overly intellectual. If Rain adds some juicy sex scenes he will over...

3.0 out of 5 stars The Mummy Case
I like the characters and story line. I do not like a book ending at 77 percent or including a sample of book 1 which I already read at the end of book 2. It is a total ripoff and very frustrating.

If Rain adds some juicy sex scenes he will over take J.D. Robb in sales and give him a new publishing outlet. He is worth more than a few bucks a book in sales. Read the book, it's bargin if not outright theft! He has earned a fan. I will be following him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best so far., June 28, 2010

This book is even better than, "Dark Horse."
The character developement is wonderful, and the plot much better than I expected. I love the fact that the story and sub-plots take top billing over everything else, and romance is more important than sex.
I can't come up with enough superlatives, but I'll be buying whatever Mr Rain publishes, and hoping he keeps at it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great storyteller; terrific story, December 26, 2010

J.R Rain creates characters we care about and plot lines that are nearly impossible to put down. I thought the Jim Knighthorse books would be a runner-up to his Samantha Moon series, but I was wrong--they're every bit as good. The Mummy Case is a smooth sequel to the first Jim Knighthorse book, and creates a whole new case for Knighthorse while seamlessly carrying forward a couple of the important plot lines from the first book. I hope to see many more books from Rain; he is a great storyteller. I do wish his books were available in paperback print form, but I'll take them anyway I can get them. A message to publishing houses everywhere: If you're not chasing J.R. Rain down to publish his books, you're passing up a very salable author and a profitable opportunity. Get with it and sign this guy!

J. R. Rain is a new author for me, but he does a good job with this mystery. Characters are developed well. This is a story about a mummy from the West that ended up in a museum. Trying to identify the mummy lead to a real mystery with murder and danger around every corner. Fun mystery...you will enjoy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Mummy Case - a five-star page turner, May 8, 2010

Ever since I came to Arizona in the late 60s, I've been riveted by tales and legends of mummies in the American Southwest - remember "The Thing" highway billboards? But tales of American mummies are hard to find, so I was especially excited to see that the second Jim Knighthorse mystery novel has a real mummy in it. With snappy, witty dialogue that advances the plot at a fast pace, private detective Jim Knighthorse works a mummy case in order to discover the identity of Sylvester the Mummy, one of Huntington Beach's main attractions, as well as the cause of his death. A two-pronged assignment, he also needs to find out who or what recently killed a historian who was researching the mummy's history.

His girlfriend of eight years, Cindy, a sexy woman with patience and concern about his unhealthy habits, and who also appeared in the first Knighthorse novel, makes a bigger reappearance here. A woman in jeopardy, anti-Darwinists have trashed her lecture hall and thrown quite a scare into her. She's being stalked. (I always like it when the P.I.'s main squeeze is in terrible danger! Danger and romance go together well.)

With never a dull moment in Jim Knighthorse's crazy life, he is still on the trail of whoever brutally killed his mother years before. He was ten years old when it happened, but the cold case might be heating up, thanks to clues in some old photographs that his estranged dad recently handed over.

I read this enthralling book in a single day. It was a satisfying, compelling mystery, several mysteries, in fact, with characters who sparkle and come to life like a movie in your mind, as do the California settings. His Knighthorse novels feel very true to life. I look forward to more mysteries in this series by J.R. Rain, who has also been a Hollywood screenwriter and a real, licensed California P.I.

Five stars for crafting a mystery I could not put down!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite series, August 29, 2011
Jim Knighthorse is a "normal" person, as opposed to the author's other books with vampires, werewolves, and ghosts. But he's quirky, easy to underestimate, and lots of fun. He's got just enough of a dark side to keep him real. You think you know where the story is going and then hangs a sharp left. So stay with him! These are more stand alone than Vampire for Hire series, but Rain still leaves you wanting more. SOON!! The ending for this one is like a kick to the solar plexus. I sat there staring at my kindle saying "OMG!" Really, really waiting for next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!, June 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Mr. Rain may just make a mystery reader out of me. I really enjoyed this, the second of the Jim Knighthorse series. I love the cocky, flawed character of Jim Knighthorse. The humor in these books is enough to lighten the mood of what could be a more gruesome genre. I decided some time ago (mostly as related to TV shows) that I like my murder and mayhem with large doses of humor. In this book, Jim has four threads going: his girlfriend Cindy is being stalked and harassed; his friend Sanchez, the cop, is trying to help his son get back at a gang of bullies who put him in the hospital; he's making headway into solving his mother's murder; and he is hired to find out who killed an historian looking into a local mummy attraction. The four threads are interwoven nicely and without causing confusion to the reader. The only thing I view as a negative is the fact that there were no conversations with God at the McDonald's. I missed that character and the moral debates. Hopefully there will be another Jim Knighthorse book very soon!

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth the price, September 16, 2011
This story proved to be an easy read and entertaining, worth the price. I liked it enough to buy another of his books. Perhaps just a bit of editing in this book would have helped. The girl with the rifle is introduced as a blonde, but the next time Knighthorse meets her, "she shook her dark ponytail". Maybe she did change her hair color. Anyway Knighthorse gets 5 stars for self confidence.
