Book Description

September 15, 1998 7 and upRedfeather Books
Most people have heard of Egyptian mummies and know the history behind them. But what about other, more local mummies, like the mumrny of an outlaw that was used on the set of The Six Million Dollar Man? How did the eighty-seven-year-old mummified remains of a fugitive end up as a prop for a TV show?

In a series of fascinating chapters, Brenda Z. Guiberson tells the exciting true tales of several North American mummies that helped to solve ancient mysteries--or became mysteries themselves. Mummy Mysteries is filled with photos and detailed illustrations that give clues to each puzzle. And at the end of the book, the author sets up six mysteries that let the readers become archaeological detectives.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7-There are lots of big picture books of mummies out these days, but many of them leave out the fascinating stories of how they were made and discovered. For readers who like mysteries that unravel slowly, this book will be a joy. Guiberson focuses on mummies found in North America and explains many of the intriguing details about what scientists learn from their finds. For example, a frozen blue bison found in Alaska revealed not only that bison lived there 36,000 years ago, but also that they were preyed upon by lions. Other mummies, like those of the Anasazi or the Franklin Arctic Expedition, helped solve the mysteries of the individuals' demise. And then there was the unexpected mummy that fell out of the rafters during a filming of the Six Million Dollar Man, which turned out to be the remains of an outlaw named Elmer McCurdy. The small black-and-white pictures may turn off readers in search of more visual pizzazz. However, the text is sure to ignite vivid pictures in their imaginations.

Review

Children have an affinity for mummies. Guiberson has written this easy chapter book (one of the Holt Redfeather series) not to scare but to explain. Children who come to it to shiver will stay to be informed. The mummies found in North America vary from the buried sailor from the lost British expedition of Sir John Franklin to the great whale hunters of the Aleutian Islands. Scientists have been able to discover amazing things about the past through studying these and other mummies. A fascinating future hit. -- From Parents' Choice®
